GREYHOUND have been crowned top dogs in Division One after a 4-1 win away at second-placed New Century clinched the league title.

Just six teams remain in the division after a series of withdrawals and Sunday’s victory gives Greyhound an unassailable seven-point lead at the summit with just one league game to go.

Dave Hawkins’ side are worthy champions, having dropped just five points this term ahead of this weekend’s final fixture away against FC Walcot.

“We’re very pleased. It’s a little sad as teams have pulled out so there haven’t been that many games, but you still want to win it,” said Hawkins.

“And there’s still some quality teams in the likes of Century and Walcot.

“If you win the league you don’t win it by luck. We’ve played Century twice and won once and drew once, AFC Gas twice and beat them twice, and Walcot once so far and won that game.

“When you start the season you want to be competitive in the league and then the cup competitions are a bonus. The lads have put in a lot of hard work this season so I am delighted for them.”

Hawkins revealed Greyhound’s title triumph was far from a certainty against New Century, with the game much closer than the scoreline suggested.

Rich Saunders’ late strike gave the visitors the edge in an even first half, before further goals from Saunders and Glenn Armstrong pulled them clear in the second half.

New Century then reduced the arrears but Tony Joyce put the result – and title chase – beyond doubt with Greyhound’s fourth.

Hawkins added: “I think 4-1 flattered us a little. It makes it look like it was easy but it wasn’t.

“A draw would have been OK for us but not for them so after the first goal they had to go for it.

“Our next two goals were against the run of play as they were doing a lot of attacking as they needed something from the game.”

AFC Gas edged out SKS Blyskawica 2-1 in the only other game in the division.

Deers Leap continue to set the pace in Division Two following a 6-0 thrashing of hosts CH2M Hill, although that scoreline was overshadowed by an emphatic 8-0 success for Penhill United at home to Nationwide Pavilion.

KC Globe overcame AFC Moonrakers 5-2, while bottom side The Windmill lost 2-1 at home to Wanborough.

Cleeve Tech moved to the top of the Division Three table by beating Cross Street 4-3, while there was also a ten-goal thriller as G Power Solutions saw off Rudis 7-3.

DPR remain top of Division Four after thrashing Stratton Saints 5-0. Second-placed DH Fitness lost ground after a 4-4 draw with AFC Swindon United, while DBS beat Old Town United 5-3.

There are new leaders in Division Five after AFC Freshbrook triumphed 6-3 at Gorsehill Borough. Bounce Squad beat Nationwide 6-2, Cricklade MTA romped to a 4-0 success over Rug Shack, and PSV Swindon edged out Coleshill Youth 2-1.

Four teams are now tied at the top of Division 6, all on 29 points. Willowgreen Hotspur lead the way after a 6-3 win over Save on Tyres, making the most of a 1-1 draw between the previous top two, FC Abbey Meads and Westbrook.

Croft Junior are also in the mix following a 3-1 win over Cricklade Park Rangers, and there were big wins for County Ground and Swindon Athletic.
