CHIPPENHAM Town chief Mark Collier again lauded returning hero Charlie Griffin as he took his goals tally to four in two games since his Hardenhuish Park comeback.

Griffin struck twice on his third Bluebirds debut against Banbury United last weekend and followed that up with another brace in the 3-1 win at home to bottom side Burnham on Saturday.

Finding the net has been a big problem for Town this term and only five teams – all of which are in the bottom six – have scored less league goals.

But Collier seems to have found the answer in Griffin, whose match-winning heroics have fired the Bluebirds into the top half of the table.

Collier said: “We knew he was a goalscorer when he got him.

“Our goalscoring has been limited this season to say the least and we were looking to bring in an out-and-out goalscorer, and he is exactly what we wanted.

“His movement is good and he is always in the right place and makes the most of the chances he gets. With that comes extra pressure but he seems to relish that and delivers the goods.

“He just loves scoring goals. He’s scored hundreds and hundreds over the years but when you see the beaming smile on his face whenever he gets one, each goal means as much as the last even now.”

The Bluebirds dominated from the off, although it took them half-an-hour to break the deadlock as Griffin helped home a James Guthrie free-kick.

More good chances came and went either side of the interval and the Bluebirds had to wait until the final 10 minutes to put the game to bed, with Griffin and Jordan Roberts finding the net.

Collier added: “They are fighting for their lives down the bottom and they came with a game plan and got people behind the ball.

“We knew they would try to make it difficult for us but we played with a decent tempo and were on the front foot for most of the game.

“We scored three good goals and could have had a couple more as well.”

The only black mark against Chippenham’s performance was that they allowed Burnham a consolation two minutes from time.

“We were pretty comfortable throughout and I don’t think Kent (Kauppinen) had a save to make until they scored right at the end,” said Collier.

“Everyone likes a clean sheet, particularly at home, but a cross came into the box and it was a free header which just flew past Kent into the net.

“We’re disappointed with the way we defended there but overall we coped well with what they threw at us.

“All in all it’s another good three points and if you’d offered us 3-1 before 3pm we’d have taken it.”
