AVTAR Construction clinched the Premier Division title with four games to spare when they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at home to third-placed Village Inn.

It is actually the first time Avtar have dropped points this season, having won all of their previous 11 league fixtures.

However, boss Peter Smith was not too concerned by that and he is already eyeing up a double as Avtar also have the Adver Cup final to look forward to at the end of the season.

“It’s great to win the title with games in hand. We can relax a bit before the cup final now,” said player-manager Smith.

“Village Inn are our closest rivals, so we knew it was going to be a tight game.

“I think we were maybe a little bit too confident before the game and that affected us early on, but I have to give us credit as how we didn’t win the game by the end, I don’t know.

“Our next target is to finish the season unbeaten (in the league) and win the cup as well. I think we have done the double before but that was quite a few years ago.

“And we were unlucky in the Wiltshire Junior Cup also, as we lost in the semi-finals there.

“We’ve also got the top-scorer in the league (Shane Hibbert), so it’s been a great season all round for us.”

Village Inn took the lead in the first half at Sevenfields, capitalising on a defensive mix-up which saw two Avtar players run into each other.

Avtar came roaring back after the break however, and Smith earned the hosts a share of the spoils with his first goal of the season, a fine strike from outside the box.

The champions have no game this weekend and are next in action when they face their Adver Cup final opponents, Lower Stratton, in a league game on April 11.

Smith added: “That will be a good chance for us to see what they’ve got. We beat them 3-0 earlier in the season, so I’m sure they be keen for a bit of revenge against us.”

KS Miltax continue to set the pace in Division One after a 3-1 victory over visiting Ramsbury, courtesy of a hat-trick for Mateusz Kapustka.

Second-placed The Clifton still have a great chance of lifting the title themselves after they got back to winning ways by thrashing Core Construction 6-1 on the road. Brendan Shaw bagged a brace for Clifton, while Danny Horwood, Jimmy Horwood, Josh Aylward and Edward Herbert were also on target.

Jason Hudson’s treble helped North Swindon WMC sink hosts Bassett Bulldogs 3-1, while Swindon Centurions were 2-1 winners away at Swindon Spitfires.
