AHEAD of the final week of his side’s campaign, Fairford Town manager Gareth Davies is hoping that this term, the foundations have been laid for a bright future at Cinder Lane.

After spending last season in charge of Malmesbury Victoria, Davies took over at Fairford last summer and his team have just two games of the current campaign left to contend with – trips to Hook Norton on Saturday and Cirencester Town Development next Tuesday.

Davies’ men will finish the season in the bottom half of the Hellenic League Division One West table but after a season of transition, the Fairford boss is looking to the future with optimism.

“We’ve had to change things at the club from top to bottom – there have been a lot of changes,” said the Cinder Lane chief.

“We’ve worked hard on trying to bring the first team and the reserve team closer together and getting back to a one-club mentality.

“There have also been a few things that have changed around the club too. Hopefully we can push on next season.

“We brought in a few players recently – Ant Packer and Leigh Brown, from Wroughton – and we’re hoping that those guys will help us next year.

“We need to try and bring in a bit more experience but we’ve also tried to bring lads through from the ressies, like Lee Smith, who’s a left-winger that offers a good outlet for us and is certainly good enough for this level.

“We’ve got two games left before the end of the season. It’s gone really quickly but at stages, it’s felt like it’s gone on forever.

“We don’t have a lot to play for, so we’ll probably try out a few reserves lads in the last two matches.”

Elsewhere, New College go looking to bring their run of eight straight defeats in all competitions to an end when they host mid-table Clanfield.

College, who are 11th in the table, were beaten 2-1 when they made the trip to the Oxfordshire outfit last month.
