GREYHOUND proved that every dog has its day as they beat New Century WMC to claim the Wiltshire Sunday Cup.

New Century got out of the traps the better of the two sides but failed to capitalise on their early superiority.

A first-half strike from Glenn Armstrong gave Greyhound the lead prior to the break before Dan Drewett's goal saw them past the winning post.

The win secured a league and cup double for Dave Hawkins’ side and he has put it down to the team spirit which is sky high at the moment.

“It’s brilliant and we have got another cup final to play at the end of May so it is a tremendous achievement,” he said.

“The priority is obviously the league and the cups are just a bonus.

“We didn’t start too well and they started brightly, I thought.

“They probably had the better of the first 25 minutes but in the last 20 of the first half we got a goal and we started to play a little bit.

“It was terrible conditions, on a bobbly pitch, with the wind it spoils the game a little bit.

“We’ve got a goal, probably 15 minutes to go, and saw out the game so I am pleased.

“We’ve got the camaraderie back, we’re getting the same set of lads coming through the door every week, and there is a bit of togetherness that has been missing the last couple of weeks.”

Despite already having two trophies this season that is not a big enough haul for captain Dave Slattery, who now has his sights set on clinching the Swindon Sunday League Knockout Cup, where they face Deers Leap in the final, and the Maurice Ivory Cup.

“They are buzzing, that is two in the bag and we’ve got two more to go, I think, and it would be nice to do the four, I don’t think anybody has ever done it,” said Slattery.

“I looked out this morning and it was beautiful weather but when we got up here it was a bit windy and bobbly so we just had to knuckle down and do what we could.

“It was difficult first half and they were decent I thought but in the second half we did what we had to do.”

In Division Two, Deers Leap moved a step closer to clinching the league title with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Wanborough, while KC Globe slipped up in their chase, falling to a 4-2 defeat at home to West Swindon Wanderers.

AFC Tap & Barrel won Division Three on the weekend with a 3-2 win over G Power Solutions, while Rodbourne Real beat Tawny Owl 2-1.

DPR clinched the Division Four title in style, thrashing AFC Swindon United 7-0 at Shrewsbury Road to seal glory with a game to spare.

In Division Five, Marlborough Town Casuals capped off their season with a 3-1 win at Nationwide, while Cricklade MTA secured second spot with a 7-3 win over AFC Greendown.

Elsewhere, AFC Freshbrook fell to a heavy 7-0 loss to Bounce Squad.

Meanwhile FC Abbey Meads beat Save on Tyres Athletic 2-0 to take the Division Six title.

In the only other game in the bottom division, AFC Royal moved further clear from the bottom two with a 4-2 win over Cricklade Park Rangers.
