JOSH Morse’s early strike was enough for Swindon Supermarine to see of visiting Didcot Town in their penultimate game of the season on Saturday.

Morse found the net with Marine’s first attack after 11 minutes at the Webb’s Wood Stadium, nicking the ball off a visiting defender before firing past stopper James Foster.

Didcot then piled pressure on Sam Warrell’s goal, while Marine had chances themselves to pull further clear before the break, with Ryan Stanners and Luke Hopper both going close.

The second half was an even affair but clear-cut chances were few and far between and Marine boss Dave Webb was delighted to finish on top come the final whistle.

The result ended a three-match winless run for his side, including last weekend’s last-gasp 2-1 loss at Wimborne Town.

Webb said: “We’ve been close in the last couple of weeks and threw away a 1-0 lead last Saturday.

“It’s really good to keep a clean sheet and I’m pleased for the players that they got a well deserved three points.

“We scored a good goal through Josh after Sam Warrell had made a good save at 0-0 from John Mills, who is the league’s top goalscorer.

“We had a couple of other chances in the first half and got into good positions but instead of shooting we passed.

“We tried to score the perfect goal and you can’t do that, especially when you are playing Didcot who are sixth in the league.

“You don’t get in that position without being a good side. They’ve got some good players and we knew it was going to be difficult.

“The lads showed great spirit as a group to battle in tough conditions and see it through.

“I said to the players we’ve got two games left against sides in and around the play-offs. Those are good tests for us. I asked for a couple of wins and hopefully we can follow that up next weekend now.”

It was not all good news for Webb, however, as captain Ross Adams was forced off injured in the closing stages of the match.

The Marine chief says it is still too early to say if he will be fit to feature in their final game of the season at home to Cinderford Town next weekend.

“We lost Ross to a rib injury with about 10 minutes to go. We had to shuffle the back four but we managed to see it through,” added Webb.

“He’s very sore, he’s in a lot of pain. When it’s the ribs it’s hard to say, it might be the end for him this season but I don’t know.

“He’s been a fantastic skipper for us this season. Hopefully he can be available next Saturday, it would be a big miss without him.”
