IT WAS a bitter-sweet ending to the campaign for Dave Webb after watching Supermarine conclude their Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West commitments with a 2-0 win over Cinderford Town.

The win was a sign of what could have been for Webb’s men in what was an injury-hit season, but the Webb’s Wood Stadium chief was not using that as an excuse for a disappointing campaign.

The first goal of the game came from Josh Morse as he got his second headed goal in the space of a week to cap off a good team move.

Morse then turned provider for the second goal as his ball from the left was met by Sam Morris at the back post.

“As ever, we finished with two really good performances with two really good sides who are in and around the play-offs,” said Webb after the match.

“It is nice to finish with that but we are disappointed overall where we finished in the league.

“That is the motivation for everyone next season to improve and be pushing again in a position we want to be in.

“We have shown in the last two games what we are capable of.”

The win meant that Supermarine ended the season in 14th position.

That was an unsatisfactory finish for Webb despite having long-term injuries to key players like skipper Dave Bampton.

“I think you can look at the injuries but every team gets them,” he added.

“We have probably been harder hit than most clubs but I can’t use that as an excuse and we have to be better than that.

“Our biggest miss is Dave Bampton, who is an outstanding player at this level, a born leader and born winner.

“Not to have him play since September has probably been the biggest miss.

“There would have been games that we would have won with him on the pitch, just because of his mentality.

“He is having an operation on his hip and hopefully by pre-season he will be ready to come back and we can get him back fit with no reaction to the operation.”

Despite the season coming to an end Webb will not be resting as he looks to get his business done early for next season, which will include bringing in a number two in the next few weeks.

“Obviously we would like to bring a couple more players in if we can to strengthen what we have got and kick on next season,” said the Supermarine boss.

“We need to sit down with everyone pretty quickly and we want to try and do any work quite quickly this pre-season.

“You can’t leave it late. You just think now the season is finished your work is done, but it isn’t. We have to start again now and bring in the right players to strengthen the team we have got.

“If we can do that we have every chance of improving on this season.”
