SWINDON Spitfires United Ladies claimed the Wiltshire Cup with a 4-3 victory over Marlborough Town Ladies at Sunday’s finals day at Beversbrook in Calne.

Spitifires went in as favourites after two wins over their opponents during the course of the season and they had an early chance as Claire Moreton’s pass found Caroline Hook, whose shot was saved.

United should have opened the scoring when Mel Bristow was brought down in the box but Zofie Stepien’s resulting penalty was knocked wide.

However, two minutes later, the breakthrough came as Bristow’s effort was slotted home.

Spitfires keeper Shona Hanlon made some impressive saves but a slip allowed Marlborough to level before half-time.

United came out strongly in the second half and within four minutes, Bristow scored her second.

In the 54th minute, Marlborough levelled again but nine minutes later, Jess Dent’s shot hit the crossbar and the rebound fell to Moreton to finish.

On 69 minutes, Sandra Higgins-Hughes’ corner again found Moreton, who blasted in through a crowded area.

Marlborough struck a third but Spitfires held out, receiving the trophy as well as their league runners-up medals.

  • SPITFIRES secured a county cup hat-trick as both the U12s and U14s also tasted victory at Calne.

The U14s edged out Melksham Town 1-0, Freya Sullivan scoring the only goal after the first half had ended scoreless.

Spitfires U12s were 5-2 winners over Westbury Youth in their final.

Kayleigh Stanley and Erin Pearce led the charge for the winners with a brace of goals apiece, Grace Eagles also on target as Spitfires lifted the cup.

  • SPITFIRES U16s pulled 10 points clear of fourth-placed Bath City with two games remaining in the Wiltshire Women’s & Girls League’s U16 Division by keeping their first clean sheet in 13 games with a 3-0 success over Derry Hill United.

Swindon played some superb attacking football after a first five minutes which saw them playing very narrow, despite having five in midfield. Once this issue had been ironed out, Helena Butcher-Diaz pulled away on the right wing before crossing low into the box for Natalie Goodright to finish in an open net.

Five minutes later, Natalie Goodright was involved again as she showed off her strength in holding up the ball before laying off for Charley Reynold,s who perfected her shot from outside the area to make it 2-0.

Spitfires netted a third on 17 minutes as Poppy Cottrill battled hard to win the ball from the Derry Hill defence and in turn laid off to Butcher-Diaz to score in the near post.

The second half saw no goals but still a great performance from both sides, who both hit the woodwork.

Spitfires will be happy with their performance and the clean sheet as they head into their game against Chippenham on Saturday.
