SWINDON Spitfires hailed the change in venue to their annual women’s and girls’ tournament a big success.

The 6-a-side competition, held last weekend, was played for the first time at Watchfield Sports Pavilion having previously been held at the Ridgeway Leisure Centre.

The tournament saw more than 60 teams in age groups from under 10 to under 16, as well as an adult section, in action over the two days.

There was only one Spitfires’ success, with the under 13s taking their section title 1-0 in extra time against Carterton Town.

Vice chairperson Steven Maull was delighted with how the change in venue went and also extended thanks to the volunteers who helped make the tournament happen.

“We used Watchfield for the first time this year and we were really pleased with the facilities,” he said.

“This year was the club’s 34th Annual Tournament and possibly one of our bests, attracting over 60 teams. We are still attracting clubs from all over, especially those from Wales and this is still the largest women’s and girls’ tournament in Swindon and Wiltshire.

“We want to say thank you to all the clubs and players for taking part and to the volunteers for helping support the Swindon Spitfires 34th Annual Tournament and here’s to next year.”
