WROUGHTON will be flying the flag for Swindon in the Wiltshire League this season and manager Mark Love has his eyes honed in on a title charge.

Less than a month before the end of last term 2013-2014 runners-up Supermarine Sports folded and at the end of the season Southbrook followed suit, leaving Wroughton the only team in the Premier Division operating within the Swindon area.

After snapping up a number of reinforcements, Love doesn’t see any reason why his troops can’t improve on last season’s sixth-placed finish and challenge at the top of the table.

“We’re aiming to try and win the league. We’ve brought in a few players and if we can keep everyone together, then we could be there or thereabouts,” said the Wroughton boss.

“We’ll have to travel a little bit further for games because there aren’t so many teams near us but we can do even better than sixth.

“We’ve made some good signings and kept everyone that we wanted to keep over the summer.

"We had a tough pre-season against a lot of teams from higher levels and we’ve done quite well."

Wroughton have profited from Sports’ demise by snapping up goalkeeper Eddie Salisbury and striker Dave Rendell whilst the midfield trio of Chris Flanagan, Darren Smart and Steve Bunting have made the move from Highworth Town.

Love is also counting on former Calne Town hitman Glenn Armstrong to deliver the goods this season but the striker is missing for this weekend’s season-opener at Trowbridge Town.

The Wroughton manager added: “We couldn’t have asked for a tougher game to start the season.

“Glenn is committed to us fully this season and we’re expecting him to score a few goals for us.”
