SWINDON Spitfires boss Steve Turner has his fingers crossed that his team will get their just desserts when they tackle their first home match in the FA Women’s Premier League Division One South West tomorrow.

The newly-promoted Spits were beaten 2-1 at Cheltenham Town in their curtain-raiser last weekend, with Emily Sparkes’ second-half goal not enough to overturn the hosts’ two early strikes.

But manager Turner saw enough encouraging signs to garner belief that if his team can maintain their level of performance when they host Maidenhead United at the Elms tomorrow, the Spits have every chance of racking up a positive result.

“We conceded two goals in the first half – but the performance was really good,” said Turner.

“All of the girls gave 100 per cent and we had two shots cleared off the line that would have been certain goals if they didn’t have a 6ft 9in defender.

“I think we were a little bit nervous but we played well and we could easily have come away with something.

“If we can do that against Maidenhead, then there’s no reason why we can’t get a result.

“We’ve got a few players missing through injury and holidays, and a few girls from the development team came in and gave a good account of themselves.

“They’re knocking on the door of the first team and they’ll stay in the squad this weekend but we have got a couple of players coming back into the team.

“Jenny Gray, who plays in centre-midfield, is back in the squad and we’ll also have Jess Dent.

“She plays right-back or on the right of midfield. She’s played development football in the past but we think that she’s ready to come in to the first team.”
