THE 4-0 SCORELINE of Swindon Spitfires latest success may suggest they were on easy street, however conditions had boss Barry Winslow insisting it was anything but.

A fierce gale held up Spitfires’ approach, sometimes literally, as they put a bit of daylight between themselves and the outfit they saw off on Saturday, Morris Street.

The Division One leaders now hold a four-point advantage at the top of the table.

First half goals from Francis Cullen, Stephen Hughes and Phillip Legace, with Michael Cox adding another after the break, meant Winslow’s side got a comfortable win in the end.

Although the manager thought his Spitfires were restricted by the blustery conditions at Sevenfields.

“In the first half when we were playing against the wind and it contained us a little bit,” said Winslow.

“We were under a bit of pressure at times with long balls going over the top, but with the wind it was just blowing though and going out for a goal kick.

“It was hard for us because our keeper was just trying to get his kicks to the halfway line, but the ball was going up in the air and coming straight back at us.

“It was little bit frustrating in the first half, although we still had plenty of chances.

“Going in at half-time 3-0 up and then we got an early goal in the second half it just made things comfortable.

“In the second half we should really have been scoring a few more. I was still happy with the three points and to stretch that lead a little bit more.”

Winslow was particularly taken by the technique shown by defender Cullen to score the opener and set the platform for Spitfires to go on and take the game.

“It was a hell of a take down from a corner with, then the turn and finish, it was a very composed goal from Francis. He seemed more like a striker than a defender,” added the Spits boss.

“As soon as we got the first goal, the second came straight after, then third before the break.

“With three rolled in they had the wind against them in the second half it was a struggle for them to get the ball up the field.”

Elsewhere, Core Construction and Sports4Pinehurst drew 2-2, Lee Goodwin and Floyd Garrett on target for Core, but Jonathan Peachey twice equalising.

Chiseldon thumped North Swindon 6-1, James Lovell scoring four times and Nick Salter and Arron Smith also on target as Dwaine Dodson replied.

The only Premier Division game saw Old Town lift themselves into a four-way tie at the top of the table as they edged out Spectrum 2-1.

Spectrum took the lead through a Phillip Ryan penalty after five minutes but led by a man of the man performance from Dale Bird, Jack Duffy and Sean Broomfield turned things around.
