FAIRFORD Town may have moved level on points with league-leaders Cheltenham Saracens and won a derby match against Purton 4-1, but that didn’t stop manager Gareth Davies wanting more.

The Cinder Lane men went into the game against their third-place visitors full of confidence and with the conditions seeing the pitch at Fairford cut up, Davies was pleased with how his side worked.

However, Davies, who saw his side finish second-from-bottom in Division One West last year, felt that his side should have had more.

“We should have been more clinical in front of goal,” Davies said. “It could have been six, seven or eight, but I shouldn’t really complain as we won 4-1.

“Purton did have their spells in the game, I just felt that we played the conditions better.

“This wasn’t a game for getting the ball down and playing football, this was a day for getting the win.

“After last season, all I’m thinking about is getting three points every match – I don’t care how we do it.”

Fairford made a bright start and went ahead after 10 minutes when Jason Milhench broke down the left before pulling the ball back for skipper Matt Boucher fire home.

The hosts side continued to apply the pressure with striker Lewis Petrie twice denied by visiting keeper Daniel Gough with Milhench also seeing an effort fizz wide.

Going in a goal up at the break, the Fairford knew that they would need more against Justin Miller’s men.

Nine minutes into the second half some great work on the edge of the box from Danny Hale saw his turn and shot find the back of the net.

The third followed on 68 minutes when James Townsend's powerful header was turned in for an own goal.

Ben Carter reduced the arrears on 71 minutes with an excellent breakaway and finish before Fairford fired home their fourth in controversial circumstances.

Inside injury time, Lee Smith's effort was blocked on the line only for the referee to show a red card to Matt Bearne.

Smith wasted little time in firing home from the spot.

“That was harsh on their lad,” Davies said. “He has slid across the line and the ball has hit his hand.”

Meanwhile, New College suffered a 4-0 defeat at Cirencester Town Development.
