TOWN'S League One rivals Scunthorpe have sacked manager Mark Robins and assistant Ned Kelly, the Glanford Park side announced this morning.

Iron chairman Peter Swann, who last week confirmed his club had shown interest in signing Swindon striker Michael Smith, acted in the wake of the club's 5-0 defeat to Blackpool at the weekend.

Swann said: “We are sad to part company with Mark and Ned, but we have to think about the best interests of Scunthorpe United Football Club. We wish Mark and Ned all the best for the future.”

It is unclear what, if any, effect Robins' departure will have on any Scunthorpe move for Smith, who has also been attracting interest from Portsmouth, but is thought to favour a move closer to his Tyneside roots.
