DAVE Webb was a touch disappointed that Swindon Supermarine could not sign off the regular season with one more home win, but took comfort from the bigger picture following Saturday’s goalless draw with Didcot Town.

With Marine having already qualified for the Division One South & West play-offs, in which they travel to Taunton Town tomorrow night, Didcot were far from the main focus for Webb’s troops.

With Saturday’s match likely to be the last at the Webb’s Wood Stadium this season – unless both Marine and Winchester City, who face second-placed Banbury United, progress to the play-off final – Webb was eager to send the fans home happy.

However, the Marine boss believes coming off the pitch with a clean bill of health ahead of the final push for promotion in Somerset in midweek represents a victory in itself.

“We would have liked to have signed off in front of our own supporters with a win and we had the chances to score; we just didn’t take them,” said Webb.

“The positives are that we have posted 87 points for the season, we haven’t lost on Saturday, we picked up no injuries, and we managed to rest a couple of key players ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Taunton in the semi-finals.

“We went with a strong team. I could have rested four, five or six players but decided to go with a reasonably strong team. Chris Taylor and Brad Gray were the only two that didn’t play but the rest did.

“We’ve had an outstanding season, more points than we’ve ever gathered before, so we are in good fettle for Tuesday night and we are really looking forward to Taunton.

“We would have liked to score a few goals for our supporters on Saturday but it wasn’t to be.”

Ross Adams and Connor Thompson both put efforts wide for Marine in the first half while Connor Waldon was also off-target in the second, and Josh Morse saw the hosts’ final good chance saved by the Didcot keeper.

Webb added: “There were no goals, so everyone will assume it was a bit of a damp squib but I thought it was a reasonable game of football.

“Saturday was always going to be difficult. We knew fourth place was secure and we couldn’t move up in the table. Even though we tried to focus the players’ minds on winning the game, their minds are on Tuesday night and that’s inevitable.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough to win on Saturday but we have got a point, we didn’t get beat, and Didcot are a reasonable side, so overall, we are pleased.”
