WOODLANDS Edge will head into the final furlong of their season with a spring in their step after lifting the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield on Sunday.

Division Three side Woodlands proved a cut above their Division Five opponents Haydon at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground in Wootton Bassett, easing to a 4-2 success.

James Munday, Mark Deverall, Aaron Williams and Adam Leighfield got the goals as Woodlands won the first of the league’s three cup competitions this season.

Although the Division Three title is beyond them, with unbeaten DPR having an almost unassailable lead at the top, Woodlands secretary Joe Gelston hopes their Shield success can inspire them to overhaul Uruguay Sociedad and finish as runners-up.

“We knew we were going to be a bit stronger but the lads all came together and put in a decent performance and it was a deserved win in the end,” said Gelston.

“In the first half, we had the wind behind us and we were reasonably in control. We were 4-1 up and we just had to finish the game off in the second half.

“They put us under a bit of pressure and we did more defending than attacking but we only let in one goal, so we saw it out quite well.

“We have had a good season, it’s disappointing we won’t win the league but DPR are the strongest team by a mile. We have got a few games in hand so hopefully we can try to get second place now.

“I’d like to thank Kev Archer of Archer’s Heating & Plumbing, who has sponsored the team this year. He has given us a lot of backing and I don’t think we’d be able to have had the success we’ve had without his support.”

DPR put themselves on the brink of the title with a 4-0 win at Uruguay Sociedad, putting them six points clear with two games to go, while Stratton Saints overcame Eldene 3-1 in the division’s only other game.

Greyhound finally put the Division One title race beyond doubt with a 7-5 success at Deers Leap, coupled with a 5-4 loss for second-placed FC Walcot at AFC Gas.

Dave Hawkins’ men already had a six-point cushion, plus a game in hand, at the summit but now they can no longer be mathematically caught.

Wanborough leapt above The Windmill at the bottom of the Division Two table with a 3-2 success at home to their rivals, while second-placed Shrivenham Sunday suffered a shock 9-2 defeat to visitors Fairford Sunday.

In Division Four, Cricklade MTA cut Willowgreen Hotspur’s lead at the top to five points with an 11-1 thrashing of bottom side Coleshill Youth.

Elsewhere, Fox & Hounds Freshbrook won 6-2 at Gorsehill Borough, Croft Junior beat Purton Westbrook 4-1, while Marlborough Town Casuals were 3-1 winners over Nationwide.

There was just one game in Division Five, which saw Swindon Athletic romp to a 6-2 success at home to Purton Red House.
