SWINDON Supermarine avenged their play-off defeat last season by completing a 2-1 victory over their vanquishers Taunton Town this afternoon.

A first-half goal from Connor Waldon gave the hosts the lead before a revitalised Taunton responded after the break when Matt Wright headed his side back level.

Callum Parsons free-kick in the 66th minute was worthy of winning any match and proved enough as Marine made it five games without tasting defeat.

Swindon saw a lot of the ball in the early phases but it was skipper Zak Westlake who had to be alert in the 17th minute as he did well to turn a low cross over his own bar.

From the resulting corner, Taunton worked a pre-planned routine but Pierce Mitchell could only fire high over the bar after latching onto Callum Martindale’s ball along the ground.

Supermarine made the most of a Taunton side who were sitting too deep in the 20th minute when Brad Hooper found Waldon in space on the edge of the box.

The Marine striker took a touch inside before drilling a low shot into the corner out of the reach of Lloyd Irish.

Waldon was presented with a chance to double his tally just five minutes later when Ryan Morgan made a good run down the left before picking out the Marine forward, however, Waldon was unable to get enough contact on the ball and the chance passed.

Taunton came into the game as the first half was drawing to a close and Connor Johns was forced into a good save low to his right by Adam Kelly with just three minutes of the first period remaining.

A goal down, Taunton came out of the second half with more intent and were almost rewarded just a couple of minutes in only for the body of Mitchell on the floor to block Owen Irish’s shot in the sic-yard box.

The visitors continued to press and Adam Kelly had shouts for a penalty turned down before Jordan Rogers fired just wide.

The pressure told in the 57th minute when Wright rose highest to head home a corner from the left.

That sparked a double change from Dave Webb, with Bradley Gray and Joe Shepherd replacing Brad Hooper and Joe Selmen.

It had the desired effect as Marine got back into the game and when they won a free-kick 25 yards out, Callum Parsons stepped up and found the corner in style.

With 15 minutes to go, Waldon did well to keep the ball alive down the right before Josh Parsons fired over the bar.

There was a moment of panic in Marine’s defence in the 81st minute when Johns had the ball poked away from his hands on the edge of the box but when the ball finally landed in the box, Rogers fired high over the bar on the turn with no one in goal.
