FAIRFORD Town will look to return to the top of the Division One West table this weekend when they host Cirencester Town Development.

Gareth Davies’ side are currently second in the league table, three points behind pace-setters Hook Norton.

Davies’ men go into the game in a good run of form, winning all but one of their last 12 fixtures, including Tuesday night’s 4-1 county cup win over Longlevens.

“I thought we showed what we are capable of doing, I would class them as an established Hellenic Premier side and I thought it showed we can match sides at that level,” said Davies.

“It’s been a goodyard stick for us. We’ve used the last couple of cup games to see how far we have come.”

Third-placed Cirencester Town Development currently stand in the way of Fairford regaining top spot in Division One.

“We’ll be aware of the threat from them, but if we play like we did on Tuesday, then we will give ourselves half a chance,” added Davies.

“Last year, we were at the top of the league for a while, but when you’re top, everyone wants to beat you, so I’m quite happy with where we are.

“We are ticking along nicely. We are just taking it each game as it comes and we don’t look any further than that because I don’t want to get carried away.”

Purton came undone late on when they were beaten by Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the first round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup, as they lost 3-2.

Purton will now have to wait until the October 22 for their next game, which is away at Shrivenham.

Tuesday night saw Matt Cosnett’s New College Swindon lose 6-0 for the second time in a row, as Downton removed them from the county cup in emphatic fashion.

Tomorrow, they will travel to Hardwicke Playing Field as they prepare to face bottom-of-the-table Tytherington Rocks.

Shrivenham will aim for all three points when they host Shortwood United Reserves.
