CHIPPENHAM Town returned to winning ways with a bang this weekend as they recorded a 5-0 win over Cambridge City.

Andy Sandell got things moving in the first half when he headed Mark Collier’s side 1-0 up as they entered the interval.

That advantage was soon doubled when Matt Smith latched onto a David Pratt cross to put Chippenham two goals to the good at the start of the second.

Pratt was then part of the next goal when he earned his side a penalty, which Sandell slotted home to make it 3-0 to the Bluebirds.

The fourth came as the game was drawing to a close as Will Richards nodded their fourth goal past the Cambridge keeper.

The fifth and final instalment went to Pratt, who ran down the centre of the pitch at the Cambridge defence before applying the finish to round off a 5-0 win.

“It was an outstanding performance. We were on the front foot from the off and I think we were a little bit unlucky not to have a few more going into half-time,” said Collier.

“We had two or three chances, but we managed to pass it around and in the second half it was one-way traffic.

“To score five goals at home against anybody in that division is pleasing, (as is) a clean sheet and three more points.”

Despite going into the game on the back of disappointing cup defeats to Leiston and Swindon Supermarine, Collier wasn’t surprised by his team’s five-star performance.

“We’ve been playing well in the league. The last league game we played we scored four and we managed to rest a few players during the week too,” added the Chippenham boss.

“I’m not surprised. We have a good group of players and a great team spirit, we need to push on now and improve week on week.”

The Bluebirds now have a quick turnaround as they prepare to travel to Cinderford Town on Tuesday night, with the Chippenham manager unsure what to expect from the league strugglers.

“It’s quite a difficult place to go, I know they’re in the depths of the league but they’ve got a new manager in and signed four or five players in the last week,” added Collier.

“We played them earlier in the season and that was a difficult game, we don’t know too much about them.”

Meanwhile, Swindon Supermarine’s Division One South and West trip to Barnstaple Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch in north Devon.
