FAIRFORD Town needed a 90th minute equaliser to snatch a point after coming from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Purton.

Justin Miller’s men took an early lead through Matt Bennett when he found a way past the Fairford keeper in the 21st minute.

The visitors took their goal advantage into the break, but it didn’t last long as Dan Hale equalised for the hosts when he headed the ball into the net less than 10 minutes into the second half.

Purton regained their lead on the hour mark through Nathan Gambling to take the score to 2-1 to the visitors.

But it was a late goal which rescued a point for Gareth Davies’ side when Jason Milhench popped up in the 90th minute to level the scoring.

Despite the late equaliser, Davies was unhappy with his team’s performance and described it as a bad day at the office for the Hellenic Division One West league leaders.

“In spells of the game when we were dominating possession, they’d just seem to get a goal as we were getting on top which flattened us out a little bit,” said the Fairford manager.

“Too many of our lads weren’t at the races. Fair play to Purton they came and they had a plan - a point is a point.

“At the end of the day we didn’t get beat, we didn’t give up and that is the only positive I can take out of it.”

Davies also feels that his side need reminding they will have to roll up their sleeves at some point this season despite their dominant start to the campaign.

“When we have been beating teams by five or six I don’t think it has really done us any favours we’ve not really had a game,” added Davies “Purton was a game we had to be up for it and too many of our players weren’t at the races and we needed everybody at it.

“When you’re top of the pile you are there to be shot at and you have to deal with it. It is what it is.”

Meanwhile Shrivenham were knocked out of the Berks/Bucks FA Intermediate Cup after losing 2-1 to Westwood United, Fraser Little getting their goal.
