HIGHWORTH Town boss Jeff Roberts admitted that he had never been involved in a game like Saturday’s after his side played out a 6-6 draw at home to Highmoor Ibis.

The hosts had taken a three-goal advantage at The Elms before conceding five without reply and having to equalise twice late on.

It took just two minutes for the scoreboard to start ticking over as Aysa Corrick netted before he scored his second of the game, getting on the end of a short corner from Ryan Stanners.

Corrick wrapped up his hat-trick with a fine solo effort shortly before the break but Highworth were unable to hold onto their three-goal advantage going into the dressing room as the visitors pulled one back on the break from a home free-kick.

Highmoor were back within one shortly after the re-start and less than 10 minutes later, had restored parity.

They weren’t done there though as they netted two more in quick succession with a third of the game remaining, the latter coming from a mis-placed clearance from goalkeeper Kent Kauppinen.

Keiron Gleed pulled a goal back for Highworth within minutes before substitute Ashley Edenborough levelled from a tight angle.

Highmoor looked to have secured all three points when they scored a sixth from another mistake from Kauppinen but Edenborough ensured the spoils were shared when he converted late on from the penalty spot.

“Six each, what a scoreline. I have never been involved in a game like it,” said Roberts.

“We started really well and had some very good movement from the defence into the midfield and out to the flanks and Aysa scored quite quickly.

“We conceded literally seconds before half time which gave them a glimmer of hope.

“If we didn’t concede that goal before half time, I think the game would have been done and dusted.

“There were some stupid errors that cost us.

“In the first half, I thought it was some of the best football I have seen us play but we have let ourselves down in the second half where we haven’t dealt with things.

“We seem to struggle going up the hill in the second half. Sometimes we do need to go long and we can’t play football all the time.

“Whether we need to look at that and play a bit different to what we do, I don’t know.”

Meanwhile, Royal Wootton Bassett Town started the new year in the right fashion as they came from behind to be 10-man Ascot United.

Dale Richards, Sam Packer and Steve Robertson all netted for the visitors to claim all three points.
