AN EARLY wobble aside, Wroughton picked up where they left off on their return to action in the Wiltshire Senior League last weekend.

The villagers ended 2016 at the top of the tree and kept themselves two points ahead of second-placed Shrewton United with a 4-2 victory at Corsham Town Reserves on Saturday.

The visitors conceded an early goal but headers from youngsters Jordan Lea and Shane Hibbert turned the game around before half-time and then Tom Dingle, also with his head made it 3-1 in the second period.

Hibbert grabbed his second and his team’s fourth of the game and although Corsham snatched a late consolation, there would be no stopping Wroughton claiming their 10th win on the spin.

“The lads haven’t been training over the last two weeks and when we conceded about three minutes you’re thinking that it’s going to be one of those days,” said Wroughton assistant manager Paul Bowden.

“But to be fair to us, we got ourselves 2-1 up and in the second half, we were completely on top.

“It’s nice to come back with a win after a few weeks off and 10 wins in a row is great.

“We’ve got Ludgershall next – they’ve put some form together – and then we’ve got Shrewton, who are our closest challengers.

“I know there’s still a lot of games to go but if we can win those two matches, I think we might have one hand on the trophy.”

Elsewhere, Malmesbury Victoria Development were unable to upset title-chasers Shrewton United as they lost 3-0 on Salisbury Plain but Marlborough Town kept themselves on the coattails of the top two with a 3-1 win at Devizes Town Reserves.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves were beaten 4-1 at home by Ludgershall Sports.

Melksham Town Reserves booked a quarter-final Senior Knockout Cup clash with Wroughton in style as they thrashed struggling Pewsey Vale Development 13-1 in a first-round tie.
