HIGHWORTH Town manager Jeff Roberts was delighted with how his side accustomed themselves to tricky conditions to claim a 4-1 win over Highmoor-Ibis.

The Worthians started their Hellenic League Challenge Cup tie well when Luke Cousins opened the scoring early on.

Cousins was soon on target again when the home goalkeeper fumbled Keiron Gleed’s cross, allowing the Highworth man to grab a second.

Towards the end of the half, Ashley Edenborough also got on the scoresheet when his spectacular bicycle kick made it 3-0 and then Edenborough scored his second of the game after the break as Roberts’ troops compounded their early dominance.

The hosts did find a reply late on, but it was nothing more than a consolation as Highworth booked their place in the next round.

Roberts was more than happy with how his side adapted to see out a win on what was a difficult surface to play on in Reading.

“We just went a little bit more direct. It took us 10 or 15 minutes to get used to it, but I thought we played the conditions well,” said Roberts

"They are always an awkward side to play against. The conditions didn’t help but we did adapt very well.

“We lost our shape a little bit in the second half. We were still pushing when we really didn’t need to, so we got caught out by a couple of balls over the top.

“It’s disappointing we conceded. It would've been nice to have stayed solid at the back but I’m happy to come away with a 4-1 win.”

The Highworth boss was also glad to see Edenborough back up to speed after the striker's recent injury struggles, which have interrupted his season so far.

“Ash is a great player technically. We gave him 50 minutes and he put a shift in. He’s been an excellent signing for us from the start, really," he added.

“If we can keep him fit, we can still push. We have the experience there with Ross Adams in there as well."

Royal Wootton Bassett Town were also involved in cup action at the weekend as they played host to Woodley United in the Supplementary Cup But Bassett would have to work harder for their victory as Rich Hunter’s team needed extra-time to secure a 2-1 win – Steve Robertson got both goals.
