SWINDON New College head coach Matt Cosnett is under no illusions that his side face a tough test when they come up against Hellenic League Division One West pacesetters Fairford Town this weekend.

Despite that, Cosnett admits it is the perfect chance for College to spring a surprise result in the division, with the onus firmly on the visitors.

“They’re flying at the moment and it will be a good test for us,” said Cosnett.

“Ultimately, we have nothing to lose. If we get beaten, then people will expect it, but if we beat them, it is obviously a great result for us.

“We’re capable of getting something if the players are all switched on and tuned in to what we have done in training this week.”

The College chief believes his team have done well so far this season, although has been left to rue the chances they have been unable to take.

With just four wins all season, Cosnett will be hoping Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over Tytherington Rocks in the Supplementary Cup will inspire his side to another rare success at the weekend.

“It’s been a good season in patches. We didn’t deserve some of the results but, because of the age group the players are, they haven’t got the senior heads to help them out,” he added.

“It’s a learning curve but as long as we are solid and we are competing, then that is OK.

“We take a lot of confidence from our cup win. It’s always hard down at their place but the players did really well and it was a great result for us.”

New College aren’t the only side with a tricky game at the weekend as Justin Miller’s Purton will look to build on last weekend’s draw with Shrivenham by claiming victory over Abingdon.

Just one point and one league position separate the two teams, with Miller’s men trailing the Oxfordshire side, who are in sixth place, with 40 points.

Michael McNally’s Shrivenham travel to Cheltenham Saracens.
