WROUGHTON Reserves manager Ian Leonard was delighted to mark the club’s first season in the league with a cup final date.

The side, spawned from Wiltshire League team Wroughton, only formed last summer, with Leonard taking over at the helm and on Saturday they were able to secure a place in the final of the George Thomas/ Don Rogers Cup with a 5-3 win over Chiseldon.

Despite the hosts taking a 1-0 lead, with the wind in their favour in the first half, a Jamie Pidgeon hat-trick put the visitors in control of the tie and further goals from Jordan Lea and Mike Thompson secured safe passage to the final.

“We went 1-0 down and there wasn’t much panic from our side,” said Leonard.

“They were with the wind in the first half and we always thought that in the second half, we would get back into the game with that in our favour.

“This side were only put together at the start of the season and they are a young side.

“We got together to see how it would pan out and it is going alright at the moment.

“It is nice to have a cup run for the morale of the group and to get to the cup final is a great achievement in our first season.”

Who Wroughton face in the final is yet to be decided after the other semi-final between Deers Leap and Ramsbury was abandoned midway through the second half, with the scores level at 1-1 and Deers Leap being down to nine men.

The Wiltshire FA have said that they are now following the disciplinary process and will not comment while this is ongoing, with no date for the rearranged fixture given at this time.

Meanwhile, Tawny Owl made light work of their semi-final opponents, Bassett Bulldogs, in the semi-final of the Adver Cup as they wrapped up a convincing 8-1 win.

They also face a wait to discover who they face in the final, with Old Town United and Haydon Wick set to play this coming weekend, after their game at the weekend was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

In the league, Swindon Centurians ran out 4-1 winners over North Swindon in the Premier Division, while Marlborough secured a vital 1-0 win away to Stratton Juniors in Division One in the only game to beat the weather.
