IT WAS first versus third in Division One as Greyhound hosted FC Walcot at the weekend.

Greyhound took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Sam Collier and Ritchie Saunders, but conceded twice in the final 45 minutes as they battled a strong wind.

Nevertheless, Greyhound remain at the top of the table, five points clear of second-placed AFC Gas, who have two games in hand.

“The wind spoiled it a bit because it was a cracking game between two sides without much to separate them,” said manager Dave Hawkins.

“We had a chance to wrap it up in the first half, missed it and they came back to equalise.

“We gave them a couple of soft goals and it’s annoying we didn’t finish it off, but we move on.

“If someone said to me at the start of the season we could win the league if we won our last four games, I would have taken that.”

Despite blowing a two-goal advantage, Hawkins remained calm about the result, unlike his players who were frustrated not to pick up all three points.

But with difficult conditions Hawkins was happy to settle for a hard-fought draw, adding: “The players were disappointed because they were 2-0 up and we had a couple of decent chances to finish it off.

“Their keeper made some decent saves or we missed the target but the players were more frustrated than me because we didn’t get beaten, which is a bonus.

“The wind really had a big part to play in the game, it wasn’t from end to end it was a swirl. It affected both sides.”

“You just have to work hard. We know if we work as hard as the other team then we will always have a chance.”

In the second tier, it was a high-scoring weekend as league leaders Rodbourne Real claimed a thumping 9-0 away win over third-placed DH Fitness.

Meanwhile, Chilli Shak improved on that tally as they put 12 past Fairford Town Sunday in a 12-2 away victory.

Division Three’s Purton Freshbrook were also able to wrap up all three points in a comfortable 6-0 win at home to Stratton Saints.

Croft Junior’s narrow 3-2 win over Willowgreen Hotspur meant they moved to within three points of top-of-the-table AFC Cricklade. The result puts just two points between the top three sides in the division - Cricklade and Haydon both have 22, while Croft are just behind them with 20 to their name.

AFC Cricklade weren’t in league action this weekend as they came up against Nationwide in the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield.

They claimed a comfortable 5-1 win to progress to the final, where they will face either Highworth Town Sunday or Coleshill Youth, who meet this coming Sunday.
