SHRIVENHAM Town managed to stretch their unbeaten run 10 in the league with a 3-2 triumph over North Leigh on Saturday.

The Hellenic Division One West side endured a frantic first half which saw both teams scored twice as they went in at the interval at 2-2.

Lance Lewis was on hand to give Shrivenham an early lead but they were soon pegged back when Aaron Williams struck for the hosts.

Soon afterwards, Alfie Saunders put the home side in the driving seat when he notched from a corner 25 minutes into the first half.

However there was one more twist before the half-time whistle as Leigh Brown managed to equalise, before netting a second-half winner, much to the delight of manager Michael McNally, who admitted his side were below par in the first 45 minutes.

“It was sloppy defending from a corner. We just switched off and again for the second we didn’t go with the runners and they went 2-1 up,” said the Shrivenham manager.

“We weren’t playing particularly well but we came back to make it two each at half-time.

After a stern word or two from the Shrivenham chief during the break, he was delighted with the second-half showing from his players.

“I had a bit of a go at them,’’ added McNally.

“We’ve been on one hell of a run and we have been outstanding in the last few months.

“I don’t know if it was down to the heat but we were a yard or so off the pace. I told a few of them some home truths and they responded.

“Their attitude, commitment and desire has been brilliant so I don’t need to say too much to them.

“But fair play to the lads because in the second half because we were on top for the majority of the 45 minutes.

“We scored a fantastic third goal. I think every player was involved in that goal before Leigh (Brown) put it in the top corner.

“I’m so pleased for them at the moment because they are working so hard and getting their rewards.

“I can’t speak highly of them enough at the moment. I’m having the same 14/15 players turn up and I feel sorry for the ones who are on the bench because, at the moment, we have 11 lads who are outstanding and they want to keep the shirt.

“The togetherness and willing of the team has been fantastic.”

Elsewhere in the division New College picked up their eighth win of the season with a slender 1-0 away at Shortwood United Reserves.

Shrivenham are one of two local teams to have a game during the week as they travel to Hook Norton on Wednesday night.

Champions Fairford Town are the other as Gareth Davies will also hit the road as they come up against ninth-placed Clanfield 85 tomorrow night.
