BILL Robertson and his Sport 4 Pinehurst side will have to wait until Saturday before they can get their hands on the Division One trophy, having seen their final game of the season against Haydon Wick called off.

The home side could not muster up a team for the final weekend of the campaign meaning Robertson’s side were given all three points, clinching the title by six points from Old Town United.

While Robertson’s side were unable to mark their achievement how they had planned, with celebrations now planned for the next bank holiday weekend, he was proud of how his side secured the title, something he had targeted since the opening game of the season.

“It was disappointing because we wanted to win it on our own turf,” he said.

“We’ve got a very good young squad with a little bit of experience in it and we set our sights on the league this year and knew what we wanted.

“I couldn’t be happier for the lads. They really earned it and really worked hard for it – especially my young goal scorer, Jon Peachey-Score, he’s been brilliant for me this year.

“If I was to be honest, at the start of the season, I knew we had the team to do it and I knew that Old Town were going to be a very hard team to beat but they gave us the incentive in the first match.

“When they gave us the first three points because they couldn’t get a team together, having said they would beat us. That gave us all the incentive we needed.”

Sport 4 Pinehurst actually secured the title last Tuesday, courtesy of a 4-1 win away to Marlborough Reserves, but Robertson had kept it a secret from the players until the job was completed in Marlborough.

“I’d actually told the lads that we hadn’t won it and we needed to win Saturday’s game,” he added.

“So at the end of the match, as we had won, I went out to the car, brought my football bag in and let the lads know that I had lied to them and we were league winners.

“They went crazy, as you do, but it was hard to celebrate when you’re out in the sticks and people are driving home.”

Meanwhile, Old Town United slumped to a 4-2 defeat away to Wroughton Reserves as they came up just short in their title bid, while Marlborough were 4-0 winners at home to Lower Stratton and New Town All Stars completed a 1-0 win over Chiseldon.

In the Premier Division, champions Tawny Owl signed off in emphatic style with a 10-5 win over Swindon Centurians, while Swindon Spitfires shot down Sportz Central 8-2.
