SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb stressed the importance of not reading too much into his side’s 7-1 defeat at the hands of Swindon Town during Saturday’s friendly.

David Flitcroft’s visiting side proved far too strong for the home side as Conor Thomas, John Goddard, Luke Norris and trialist Jordan Slew got on the scoresheet.

New County Ground signing Paul Mullin also found the back of the net, as he bagged a hat-trick at the Webbswood stadium.

However the hosts did have something to show for their efforts, as Callum Parson’s popped up to net a consolation on the hour.

“We have had the players in for a week, so we have only done three training sessions,” said Webb.

“It was a fantastic day and a great game of football. I think all the Swindon Town fans who came will be impressed.

“We have picked up no injuries, but we don’t start our season until August 12, we have eight pre-season friendlies and that was game one.

“You don’t expect to see a lot of the ball, and the game for us is about our players having the opportunity to play against professional players.

“That is what we have to try and be. We have to be as fit as we can, as professional as we can and try and pass the ball as well as we can.

“We have to try and get to that level so when we come to play teams who are in our league, we can dominate like they did to us.”

Webb, whose side narrowly missed out on a play-off spot last term, says there are plenty of things which can take confidence from.

Supermarine supporters also had a first chance to look at new signings such as TJ Bohane and Mason Hathaway, and while the Marine chief says he is happy with his group, he is always on the lookout for new players.

Former striker Mark Draycott, who returns to the club for a fourth time, has also signed after a stint at Conference South side Hungerford Town, having scored 37 goals in 75 starts in his previous spells with the Webbswood Stadium side.

“There are loads of positives, there were some really good performances and there will be a few tired legs from our players, “ added Webb.

“Overall, it was a fantastic day for the football club. We have been able to showcase our stadium, our pitch and our players.

“We are always looking, I’m happy with what we have and there is only one player who didn’t re-sign with us from last year. We have a few young lads who have come in and done well, so there are lots of positives.”

Next for Webb’s men is the visit of National League South outfit Gloucester City on Tuesday (7.45pm), while League Two side Newport County make the trip to Wiltshire on Saturday (3pm)
