THE Wiltshire Sunday Cup took centre stage for Swindon Sunday League clubs this weekend, with Croft Juniors picking up perhaps the stand-out result of the day.

Croft saw off Paxton House United in emphatic fashion with a 9-0 win, while Penhill United were on the right end of a similar scoreline as they dumped  hosts Sporting Box out of the competition, with a 9-1 win.

Division Three outfit Sevenfields United found Chippenham and District League side Bath Road too strong as they fell to an 8-0 defeat on the road.

PSV Swindon saw their cup hopes dismantled by Bromham, who had little trouble getting past Duane Maslin’s troops in a 6-2 triumph for the home side.

Rudis against Crown was a slightly more competitive affair, but the latter did well to pull through with a 4-1 scoreline.

Nationwide put three past Stratton Saints to secure a 3-1 win on home turf, courtesy of goals from Pedro Porto, David Murray and Ryan Amos to secure their spot in the next round, much to the delight of manager Chris Wilson.

“The general team play and communication we were having meant it was one of the best matches we have had this season,” said Wilson, who only joined the club this year.

“We were getting the ball down and not hoofing it all the time, it’s better to play passing football.

“We also have a solid back-line, even though we did concede, we put in strong tackles when they were needed.

“As long as you do the basics well, everything else will follow.”

Another team who will join them in the next stage is AFC Freshbrook following their 4-1 victory at the expense of Purton Red House.

Cleeve Tech were able to secure their place in the next phase after their opponents AFC Gas handed them a home walkover by not being able to raise a side.

Willowgreen Hotspur suffered similar fate, but that won’t concern Greyhound, who will progress.

Warminster Rovers were another team who handed a win to their opponents, this time to Athletic Marlborough alongside George & Dragon, who allowed Highworth Town Sunday through.

Meanwhile, there were only four domestic fixtures across all three tiers.

The solitary Division One clash between Cleeve Tech and Jovial Monk saw the latter take the spoils in a high-scoring game they won 6-4.

In Division Two, Wanborough and Save on Tyres Athletic both had to settle for a point as they drew 1-1.

The bottom tier had two games as Charles Geddes won 6-3 at Openwork United, while Cricklade Rovers were 4-1 winners over their hosts, Swindon Rovers.
