  • Women across Swindon are being invited to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2008. And the charity is asking them to pass on the invite to friends, family and colleagues now that entries are open for the Swindon events.

This will be the 9th time Cancer Research UK's Race for Life has come to the town and this year there will be two Race for Life events in Swindon, taking place at Lydiard Park on Saturday, June 14 at 2pm and Sunday, June 15 at 11am.

Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event, where women of all ages come together and walk, jog, or run 5k to raise money to help Cancer Research UK beat cancer.

Many women who take part in Race for Life do so for a personal reason; some women are cancer survivors, while others take part in memory of or to celebrate the lives of loved ones affected by cancer.

Natasha Russell, area event manager for Race for Life, said: “We hope this is an invitation women can’t refuse. At Race for Life there are thousands of women of all ages and abilities, shapes and sizes who will motivate and inspire each other to complete the 5k course. Many simply walk round, chatting and having fun, but all share and enjoy the incredible sisterhood and spirit on the day.

“Last year’s events had an unforgettable atmosphere and we raised an incredible £280,146. This year, we are hoping that 5,600 women will sign up to take part in the Swindon events, helping us to raise a target of £342,000.”

Cancer Research UK spends funds research all over the south west. In Swindon, patients with a type of blood cancer called mantle cell lymphoma are being recruited for a national clinical trial. The researchers are investigating whether adding a new drug, rituximab, to the standard chemotherapy treatment will help to improve survival.

Gloria Hunniford, patron of Race for Life, said: “I’m extremely proud to be patron of Race for Life 2008 and would urge every woman, no matter what their age or ability, to sign up for their nearest event. It’s all about women coming together, having fun and celebrating the meaning of Race for Life. The genuine enthusiasm and emotion demonstrated by women across the UK creates an atmosphere that is truly unique and inspiring. It means so much to me to be a part of this amazing event.”

The Swindon participants will be part of a total of 750,000 women from across the UK, taking part at over 260 events. Together they will be hoping to raise a total of £50 million to fund vital life-saving research into the prevention, treatment and cure of all types of cancer.
