NESTLED in a rural area of outstanding natural beauty to the south west of Swindon, just over 100 children attend Broad Hinton Church of England Primary School.

Headteacher Elizabeth Floyd explained how the school revolves around the three key principles of love, care and respect.

She said: “Every day we laugh and smile. Everyone knows each other, everyone supports each other, older children support younger children and staff support other staff. It’s a happy atmosphere.”

Broad Hinton’s mission statement is to provide a quality education for a lifetime of opportunities, and the school does this is by nurturing pupils’ academic and non-academic skills and abilities.

“We’re very active in the way we teach,” said Mrs Floyd.

“We are topic-focused rather than subject-focused.”

Broad Hinton’s last Ofsted inspection in February 2012 – which graded the school ‘good with many outstanding features’ – particularly praised the school for outstanding teaching in classes and strong cross-curricular links which enthused pupils and motivated learning.

The school also runs a great variety of different after-school clubs, from the popular Cup Cake Club to the Art Club to the Animation Club where children can make films, and the Debating Club.

Children also have a very strong voice in school matters, with an active School Council which meets regularly with staff members and Governors to discuss the school’s ongoing development.

Last summer, Broad Hinton won its second Eco Schools Green Flag Award for its commitment to recycling, energy saving, tackling pollution and work towards making travel to school safer.

Their Eco School Team also works closely with Carillion Health to help improve the school’s sustainability projects.

The school is currently working with the Friends of Broad Hinton School towards putting more equipment on the field for children to use, such as the willow dome which is being built with Wiltshire Wildlife.

Perhaps one of the most interesting connections Broad Hinton has developed is the link through the Swindon Rotary Club with the Desai Memorial School, in Nairobi.

Members of staff have been out to visit the school – which is also sponsored by Goddard Park School in Park North – on a number of occasions.

The school also has an on-site pre-school, Bee-Hive Pre-School, and also has a breakfast club and after-school club, allowing the school to offer effective wrap-around care to pupils.
