HAYDON Wick Primary looks to teach youngsters not only the skills they need but also the values to help them move forward in life.

The school offers ‘values education’, meaning at the heart of everything the pupils do are core values to help them become rounded individuals.

There are 22 core values the school teaches. Each month there is a focus on one of them.

Assemblies in the school are on that particular value and it is incorporated into every lesson.

The individual values are rotated on a two-year basis, with the value this month being Caring.

Headteacher Simon Cowley said: “The values are central to everything we do in the school. We are preparing the children for what they will need in life and helping them to improve as people.

“By focusing on core values we encourage positive behaviour and I believe when they finish their time at the school they ready for the next stage of education.”

Playing their part in the community is an important lesson taught to the pupils at the school, which has existed in one form or another for more than 100 years.

“At the school we want to make sure the children have a good sense of community,” said Mr Cowley.

“We are located in superb grounds, which we take full advantage of, so it is important for the school to play its part in the Haydon Wick community.”

Mr Cowley is backed up by a dedicated team of teachers who all share his vision of instilling the values and community spirit into the pupil body.

With the key value at the heart of lessons, all pupils receive all full and rounded education before leaving for secondary school.

Outside of the classroom, a wide range of extra-curricular activities is on offer, from the football team to the gardening club.

“It is very important to us that all the pupils are given the opportunity to take part in as many activities as possible,” said the headteacher.

“It helps them to develop an interest, gives them extra skills to take forward in life and means they get a lot of enjoyment out of their school day.”
