Historic documents move to museum library
THE new Science Museum Library and Archives is to be launched in Wroughton next Friday.
It will be home to original editions from scientific icons including Einstein, Galileo, Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
The prestigious 120-year-old library, which contains 26 kilometres of shelving, has been housed for the past 38 years at Imperial College, London, and is re-opening having made the move to Wiltshire in order to improve efficiency by relocating to the Science Museum's site.
The new facility will be open to the public early next year and consists of a publicly accessible library building and a storage element for the archives also on the museum's site.
Rupert Williams, head of the Science Museum Library, said: "We have a superb new facility which will allow the Science Museum Library to run in an effective and sustainable manner while providing the public with access to our world class collections."
With more than100,000 books dating back to 1486, more than a million patents and documents including the final Apollo 11 flight plan, signed by astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, the collections provide a resource for academics, students, enthusiasts and the general public.

Great, but when is the museum open, where do you park, are there any admission charges, what's available for the public to view, what times can I visit, can I visit.......? The place isn't exactly well advertised is it?

Here you go, Grumpy!
The newly-created facilities at Swindon will be opening to researchers by appointment in the near future, while staffed services will also resume in the refurbished London reading room, which has remained open for reference throughout the project except for short periods of disruptive work. Although we'll be offering limited services to start with while we get used to the new buildings and procedures and train up new staff, we hope to move to full operation around the end of January 2008.
The Science Museum Library & Archives, Swindon, is located at the Hackpen end of the Science Museum's airfield site at Wroughton on the edge of Swindon in Wiltshire. Access is via Red Barn Gate on the A4361 Devizes Road.
Visitors coming by rail to Swindon are advised to take a taxi to the Library, fare approximately £10 each way. Alternatively there is the Stagecoach no. 49 bus service which operates from Swindon bus station, and goes through Wroughton and past Red Barn Gate on its way to Devizes. Journey time is approximately 17 minutes from Swindon and a Day Rider ticket costs £2.70.
Visitors should contact the Library & Archives in advance to make an appointment, and bring personal identification with them. All visitors must check in with Site Security at the Gate House: please note that Security procedure currently requires a photographic pass to be created and held on the system.
Current Opening Hours at Swindon:
Monday to Friday, 10.00 till 12.00, 13.00 to 15.00
Please note there are no lunch facilities on site but an area has been set aside where visitors may eat a packed lunch
