Swindon Samaritans

Charity Number 1047353
Part of the international Samaritans movement Swindon and District Samaritans is an independent charity run by volunteers that provides confidential emotional support to the people of Swindon and the surrounding area who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair including those which may lead to suicide.
We believe that it is important for all our callers to be able to express difficult feelings, that they should be listened to in confidence and accepted without prejudice and that everyone has the right to make fundamental decisions about their own life, including the decision to die by suicide.
Swindon and District Samaritans are proud to be celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2007; our branch first opened it's doors in 1967. We now have a team of almost 100 trained, listening volunteers who offer emotional support to our callers over the telephone, in person or by e-mail, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In 2006 we received over 30,000 contacts, over three quarters of our callers expressed distress and suicidal thoughts.
Our branch is run entirely by volunteers and we welcome contact from potential volunteers who might be interested in training to be a listening or support volunteer.
