Letter from Derrick Bye
I FEEL duty bound to respond to Barry De La Hay's letter (SA, May 8) who in analysing the local election statistics, showing the Conservatives in the ascendancy, draws the conclusion that compulsory elections should be the order of the day.
I agree that exercising the franchise should be mandatory and draw comparisons with Australasia where both major countries recently overturned Conservative governments in favour of Labour ones.
During this past month I have been pounding away on the pavements in enthusiastic support of Labour candidates and endured the obligatory insults in the process. Undeterred I felt that many Labour voters were reluctant to vote; many were too tired and sadly some too damned idle to vote!
If Mr De La Hay's proposals were adopted we would undoubtedly witness a dramatic and welcome increase in the Labour vote, both locally and nationally thereby ensuring that Conservatives would no longer govern us at any level.
He should be aware of the adage -be careful for what you wish for, it may be granted!
My weary limbs would welcome the respite from regularly pounding the streets in the persuasion of hitherto reluctant voters to visit their polling station in support of Labour candidates and I could then enjoy resting my legs in anticipation of a more representative election result later on in the night.
