Letter from G Scott

3:22pm Tuesday 13th May 2008

THE facts are a little more complex than you pretend, Barry De La Hays. While your basic figures may well be right it tells only a small part of that night.

Taking the wards individually we discover that, in eight of eleven wards, UKIP, which you blandly lump in with others', actually beat the Lib Dems and, in two cases, quite convincingly, these being Parks (UKIP 248, Lib Dem 125) and Moredon (UKIP 229, Lib Dem 111). The Lib Dems only scored a higher percentage because they stood in every ward while we only put up candidates in just over half.

You love figures, so try these, taken from the SA's local results pages, prove that in the eleven wards we polled 2301 with the Lib Dems only getting 91 more, but in the eight wards where we beat them UKIP polled 1904 and the Lib Dems only 1404, 500 fewer, and in those wards leave the UKIP as the undisputed third political party.

I do agree with you that higher turnouts are desirable, however.
