OVER recent days, I have received several hundred emails from constituents asking me to sign a written declaration calling for an end to the cruel hunting of harp and hooded seals.

A written declaration has no binding force, but it enables MEPs to signal their opinion on a vast range of issues.

In the past three years, over one million seals have been killed in the Canadian commercial hunt, primarily for their fur. All vet reports document unacceptable levels of cruelty.

As a Vice President of the European Parliament's Intergroup' on Animal Welfare, I am pleased to confirm I have signed this written declaration and I will continue to urge my colleagues to do the same.
