CYCLISTS most definitely have right of way on a footpath by Kingsdown School.

A council blunder has left pedestrians with nowhere to go after cycle priority symbols were painted on both sides of the lane in Hyde Road.

The pavement was laid as part of a scheme to improve safety in the busy area.

Derwent Drive resident Jim Croton couldn't believe his eyes when he spotted the problem.

The 52-year-old said: "When I saw it I was incredulous. It seemed like yet another mess by the council.

"The work took place over a period of six weeks and was aimed at improving safety on Hyde Road.

"The pavements there used to be at the same level as the road so it wasn't safe for pedestrians.

"They have resolved that but now you can clearly see two cycle lanes on both sides of a footpath.

"It means that pedestrians technically have nowhere to walk there."

Ward councillor David Sammels (Con, St Philips) said he would be looking into the error.

He said: "Obviously cycle paths are important and it's good that the area has been improved.

"It's a shame that such a silly mistake was made here, and I will be chasing it up to get it resolved."

In the meantime, Coun Sammels urged people to use their common sense.

He said: "Being by the school the footpath is always busy and there have always been lots of cyclists passing pedestrians.

"We hope that people will make a little space until the matter is resolved."

A spokesman for Swindon Council said it had been an unfortunate mistake.

"We have been talking to our contractors and they will be putting it right as soon as possible," he said.

"To prevent any further confusion until then, the cycle lane should be the one closest to the hedge."
