IT had a malty taste throughout, with a sweet start and a slightly dry finish.

The regulars of the Cellar Bar in Highworth were extremely satisfied with the tipple that their landlords have devised.

Shaun and Helen Vockins have a tight-knit group of customers who come to enjoy the banter at their High Street local, and they paid tribute to the chestnut ale that is Cellarbaration.

It has been created by Witney-based Burford Brewery to mark the pub out as unique.

Shaun, 37, said: "It is a lovely drop and we are very happy with the brewers' efforts.

"I approached several brewers a few months ago, asking them to produce something local with a bit of character.

"I didn't want a golden beer though, so this was a fantastic beer."

At four per cent volume it is by no means a strong ale, but it is one that the ale lovers think will furnish many a pleasant evening.

Geoff Dawson, 63 said: "It's a great beer and I'm looking forward to having a fair few of these in future. It's not so heavy that it fills you up, and it's not light like lager, so I'm very pleased."

Keith Smith had even greater praise.

The 63-year-old local said: "My favourite tipple is Bath Ales Gem, and I would say that is approaching it for taste. Of course drinkers will have different opinions, but for a local beer is a great success and I'm sure the pub will be known for it."

Many drinkers at the Cellar are members of the Swindon branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, and so it was in awe of their drinking experience that I tried the new pint myself.

Luckily I was born and bred near Ringwood Brewery, until last week one of the largest independent brewers in the country, so I was able to make a good comparison. It will never match the legendary Old Thumper that I have drunk in varying quantities since the age of six, but I have to take my hat off to the brewers.

"It had a great dark colour, a nice light taste, and the finish left me wishing I didn't have to drive home.
