Band will go outdoors to entertain smokers

THE amp has been plugged in, the sound checks done and the vocals warmed up.

So where are the punters?

That is the dilemma facing Debbie Sharpe at the Moonrakers pub, in Cricklade Road, and so she is taking the music to the people.

Drinkers can expect a musical commotion next Friday.

In the car park for the first time the covers band Locomotion will play a two-hour gig for the benefit of smokers.

It is an unprecedented move by licensee Debbie to bring customers and entertainers back together.

"Since the smoking ban came in we have had a real hard time getting crowds for the acts," said Debbie.

"Our clientele enjoy smoking a lot and they tend to buy a pint and then head into the car park.

"It means the groups kick off their songs and there are only a handful of people inside."

So Debbie, 41, has applied for a licence to remedy that.

"We decided the best way was to move the music out to them," she said.

"We have got permission to have them on stage outside between 8.30pm and 10.30pm on Friday, September 28.

"It won't go on too late but it should be popular, there's room in the car park for at least 400 people.

"Even if there are only 50 or 60, it means the customers can get a taste of what they're missing."

The smoking ban, on July 1, coming in the middle of summer, made it easy for smoking customers to switch their drinking habits to outdoors.

But as the colder weather takes hold Debbie is worried that customers may decide to stay at home.

"I have seen people voting with their feet, going outside rather than staying inside without a cigarette," she said.

"It's not too unreasonable to think they might stay at home this winter with their own alcohol so that they can smoke in comfort.

"This is why we are working to make the gigs a success, so that people can see there is more going on than just drinking."

As an experienced local band Locomotion will be sure to play a good set.

"They have appeared here many times before and they know what people want," Debbie said.

"We have the chance to put on 12 of these events each year so if it's a success we will probably repeat it.

"I think it's a great idea, but it's over to the customers now."

Entrance to the pub is free, as it is for all the Friday gigs.

Excellent idea from an Arkells manager. I wish her luck. However I have to be honest and fear that local residents could well put an end to the festivities in the long run. Sadly the LA2003 is being used to erode the freedom of pubs and clubs to prosper and the smoking ban clearly hasn't helped. It is quite ironic that 2 pieces of legislation apparently designed to improve the customer offering, could cause so much damage to the hospitality sector. Good luck Debbie, I hope it works for you and I would ask her local residents to consider the possibility of life without such venues. In the long term that could happen, be fair once a month should not be an issue.

Good luck to them. Anyone who manages to work around this government's Stalinesque approach to legislation has my support.

And I'm not even a smoker!

Excellent idea, but further to RFM's comment above, we have even had indoor gigs cancelled in Edinburgh as a result of neighbour complaints. The smoking ban legislation is ill-thought through and deserves to fail.

I was in fact just thinking about this. good adv for the pub but very little practical. I am sure the neighbours wouldn't necessarily be happy.

I totally disagree.
it's time to put business in a position below health on the scale.

The health of who 'an idea'In the hospitality sector workers were asked in several independent surveys and 86% were happy with the status 'Q'. The smoking ban was not enacted for customers it was a 'staff' health issue, so surely the right thing was to ask all workers, rather than the public at large. The public had a choice, now the public at large has no choice, hence revenues are down in hospitality in some cases as much as 25%. Way up the non risk of ETS against the very real risk of losing ones job due to a down turn in business. Without business, health care becomes a very serious issue.

I disagree because smoking is not necessary. as an ex smoker I noticed how different the air is everywhere I go and I feel better. I don't want the smell to be back and all it's complications that are totally unnecessary. that's all.
business can be run without smoke, it'll change but that's it. MOST business against the smoke ban are only after their pockets, anything else is just an excuse.
I, as a person, care more about my health than their pockets, if you don't mind.

Hmm, typically selfish and short-sighted attitude from 'an idea' there.

How about alcohol? That's 'not necessary' either and kills thousands of people every year, wrecks families and is responsible in 75% of all crimes.

Time we banned that too, no?

The way my old local used to deal with the potential problem of noise complaints from the neighbours was simple, just invite them to the gigs and throw in a couple of free drinks.
Net result, happy neighbours and happy pub.

Big Mac, don't mention banning alcohol too loudly, after all of us denormalised smokers have been badgered into submission (good luck with that, by the way) there are going to be an awful lot of tobacco control hacks out of work and looking for something else to interfere with.

Or is it as a "reformed" smoker you still crave nicotine so making sure no-one smokes around you takes away the temptation?

Shows me that you are a very weak-willed person.

My husband is an ex-smoker and doesn't mind being with smokers. I am a smoker. Since the smoking ban came in we've boycotted pubs, clubs and cafes and we will never patronise any of these until this draconian ban is overturned.

Soory CK but iam an ex smoker and not tempted at all to go back to giving the government my money to kill me then deny me medical help. I hate the smell of smoke and the ban was the best thing ever introduced you stand outside with your cronies coughing up your lungs whilst I enjoy the clean air with a nice pint in a nice smelling bar, you lot can freeze ha ha ha just gonna help yourselves kill yourselves quicker. Ex smokers arent tempted to re-start we dont wanna be around you cos you smell.

The figures show that people are already buying more alcohol in supermarkets than they are in pubs, bars and clubs.

Eventually the same Nazis that got smoking banned will get bored of patting each other on the back about that and will turn their full attention to ridding us of the evil alcohol.

What makes me laugh most are the deluded fools who cheered the smoking ban yet claim they'll 'never' ban alcohol. Oh dear...

Bizarre- at most pubs you can hear the infernal din from local "un-musical" bands all over the neighbourhood anyway - so smokers outside can enjoy the noise anyway!
2-1 on it rains!

Jason, Not Moaning For a Change says...

I go to gigs at least twice a month to watch bands, and I'm absolutely chuffed that I don't have to spend the night choking, and my clothes don't need fumigating the following day.
The arguments for banning alcohol are not exactly relevant, as people don't get kidney / liver failure from "passive" drinking.
Good band though. I might go along to strut m' stuff
