AFTER their first night on the tiles, Swindon's Street Pastors said they were pleased with the reaction of revellers.

The group of Christians who will be taking to the town centre streets every Friday night had to care for a woman thrown out of a night club because she was too drunk, and another woman having an asthma attack.

Pastor Nigel Perrott said: "It went very, very well. People's reaction to us was very good.

"We introduce ourselves to a lot of the doormen so they know who we are and what we are about.

"We were asked to help someone who had been thrown out of a nightclub for being too drunk.

"We got her sorted out and on her way home.

"It was mainly people feeling the effects of too much alcohol who needed our help, and people falling asleep in the street.

"We talk to them, sit them on a bench help them sober up.

"We had another lady, asked by a doorman to leave the doorway. She was getting very upset and having an asthma attack. We spent time with her, and effectively stopped the police having to arrest her which saved her from a night in the cells, so saving everybody's time and effort."

Nigel said once they explained that they were not out to fight crime, but to help people in need, revellers warmed to them.

The pastors will be out in the town centre again next month and have already recruited a second team of volunteers ready to start their training in January.

As reported in the Advertiser on Saturday, most pubgoers were enthusiastic about the scheme, which has been planned for several months.
