PEOPLE wanting to visit a police station in Wiltshire will now only have three to choose from.

Gablecross police station at Swindon is now one of just three stations in the county that is open to the public, following the closure of the enquiry offices at Devizes, Chippenham and Marlborough last week.

These closures follow those last year of Malmesbury, Corsham, Wootton Bassett, Calne and Pewsey.

Wiltshire Police has been forced to close the enquiry offices because it said the number of people calling in had dropped.

Apart from Swindon, the only other stations open will be Melksham and Salisbury.

All three are open from 9am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Chief Superintendent Julian Kirby said every police station has a yellow telephone outside which gives callers a priority connection to the force contact centre in Devizes.

"More than 90 per cent of people now contact the police by telephone," he said.

"The reality is therefore that the need for people to visit their local police stations has become less and less.

"In some of the smaller stations it has not been unusual for a day to pass without a single visitor.'"
