FLORAL tributes have been laid at the scene where a teenager died on Christmas Day.

Chris Garrod, 17, of Pinehurst, was struck by a dark coloured hatchback at about 12.50am close to the pedestrian crossing at Transfer Bridges.

He later died in hospital. It is believed he had been celebrating the festive season with friends and was walking home when he was hit by the car. Great Western Way was closed for several hours as accident investigators carried out a thorough examination of the scene.

A man is currently in custody helping police with their enquiries.

Friends and family have paid tribute to the youngster on the Adver's website.

StJosephsVoice, of Grange Park, said: "RIP man, you were a great mate and you will always be remembered by us. 2001-2006 Best years of our lives."

And Chris's family thanked everyone for their support in the wake of the tragedy.

A message read: "Thank you all for your kind words, as you can imagine, it is a very devastating time for us.

"Chris was loved by everyone who knew him, and we can't imagine life without him.

"Knowing he was loved by so many is a great comfort to us and we thank all our family, friends and his friends for their support.

Beckie, Wayne and his three little brothers. x."

Flowers and a St George's flag have been left at the scene of the accident.

One of the tributes on the flag said: "RIP Gally - Love you always Laura."

A baseball cap with Chris's name on it read "RIP Gally", while a wooden cross was marked with the words "Gally we all love you".

Police appeal boards have been put up on Great Western Way as officers try to piece together exactly what happened in the lead up to the fatality.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw the dark coloured hatchback before the accident.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sgt Richard Day of the Northern Roads Policing Unit on 0845 408 7000.
