FLEET Street could soon see boozers swapping high heels for flip-flops in the early hours.

Revellers will be handed an emergency kit at the end of the night to help them get home safely.

A personal alarm, bottle of water, condom, lollipop and flip-flops will be doled out by two Fleet Street venues to those who are the worse for wear.

The Swindon Commu-nity Safety Partnership (CSP) has distributed the Alcohol Awareness Kits to Revolution and Walkabout, for handing out on Friday and Saturday nights.

The kit has already reduced crime in Conwy in Wales so 2,000 kit bags have been ordered for a trial in Swindon.

"We want people to have a good time and get home safely," said Coun Colin Lovell, Swindon Council's cabinet member for community and neighbourhoods.

"It is recognised by the CSP that this part of the town can have problems."

The survival kit comes in a plastic white bag with telephone numbers including the police and walk-in health centre.

Every item has a useful purpose: "The lollipop increases blood sugar-calming boozers so they will be less aggressive," said Coun Lovell.

"The flip-flops are designed to give women an alternative from walking home in their bare feet after discarding crippling heels."

Walkabout manager Brian Hall said: "I think it is a proactive step as we will be giving these away for free.

"All the licensees are working together to make Fleet Street a safer place to be."
