MP gets support for climate change bill

By James Wallin »

A CLIMATE change bill by a Swindon MP that aims to turn public buildings green is being supported by councils up and down the country - but not in Swindon.

Anne Snelgrove, MP for South Swindon, will present her bill, which calls for public buildings to be more eco-friendly, for its second reading before parliament on May 16.

If made law the Public Sector Buildings (Energy Performance) Bill will ensure that all office buildings across the public estate will be in the top quarter of energy performance.

The bill is supported by a number of national organisations including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Unison, the RSPB and Help the Aged.

It has also been given support by the Tory front bench and eight councils up and down the country.

But that list does not include Swindon Council.

Mrs Snelgrove said: "I'm sorry Swindon isn't on the list of supporting councils. The administration of Swindon Council is just coasting when the people of Swindon are calling for change.

"We have a council that rides on the coat tails of Government and European climate change initiatives, rather than making this a priority.

"I am really grateful for the support of everyone in Swindon who has contacted me to encourage me to get my Bill on to the statute book."

So far, 268 MPs have signed an early day motion supporting the Bill.

Coun Brian Mattock (Con, Old Town and Lawn), cabinet member for local environment, said: "If you look at the energy management report that was presented at the last cabinet meeting you can see that we have taken what the Government is doing and gone one step forward.

"The report confirmed that we intend to have a significant saving on energy costs over the next five years to the tune of £6.6m.

"That is a big saving to the council tax payer and also goes towards reducing our carbon footprint. This goes towards our target of reducing the council's carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2013."

Do you reckon Anne Snelgrove MP will secure the extra government funding the councils will need to comply with this Bill ?

Somehow I think not. Snelgrove is nothing but a windbag - how many council building were built way back when ? Does she not understand the significant cost of converting old buildings ? Even worse if they are listed.

Another effing bandwagon for Annie to hitch herself onto.

There are far better things she could be doing like pushing for a Bill to fine supermarkets for excess packaging - but she would't try and hurt big business would she - after all, where would the Labour party get all their donations from ?

She is a joke and the sooner she is removed from office the better.

Swindon Borough Council have gone from a ZERO star rating under Labour to a full TWO star rating under the Tories... and that's Labour's own ratings!

Robin Harris is entirely correct, the change Swindon people want is to end the embarrassment of being 'represented' (not that we ever are) by two hopeless Brownite MPs.

Anne may have forgotten already, but the people of Swindon sent a message of exactly what they want... and it involved a massive Tory majority council and Labour councillors barely scraping HALF the Tory vote in most areas.

Labour are no longer welcome in all but the most 'diverse' ares of Swindon.

Of course not! Case history: why Snelgrove's accolyte Mark Dempsey had the gall to campaign on a policy of reintroducing weekly rubbish collections - even though central govt. recommended AWC to councils to keep within budget! Its typical new Labour.

This bunch of spinning, double talking chaletons are due to get their just deserts next election - thank GOD. Lets just hope that Eton Dave and his cronies aren't tarred with exactly the same brush.

All this Carbon footprint business makes me laugh. If every single target was met by every single country in the world then climate change would be 5% less likely to occur. Climate change is cyclical. What will be will be, nature is the main culprit and no one is going to alter that.

In just the last week it has been announced that global warming will stabilise for the next 10 years. It confirms that it is not all man-made but is still used an excuse to con more taxes out of us!

Whilst I see what your saying RFM, the technology of the 19th and 20th centuary have interfered with the natural cyclical change. True there were no motor cars before the last ice age, however the carbon emissions that we produce will bring the next one quicker than it ought. Fossil fuels are running out and we cant just carry on dumping what we don't want in a hole in the ground. We have to address this matter now before its too late, so any discussion, bill (no matter how flawed), or conference is to be welcomed.

I also can't understand why we can't comment on the wind turbines at Watchfield although there is no oppurtunity for people to have a pop at Swindons MP's there so maybe the Adver doesn't think it worth opening for debate!

The new library building (due to be completed in October) has already won environmental awards for the highest standard of eco-performance.

In addition as Cllr Brian Mattock has said we are ahead of Government targets for Energy Management.

Hardly coasting, though still much more to be done.

This law will only affect a very small percentage of buildings in the public sector as it only applies to new builds. It's a toothless, publicity stunt with no aim other than to get Annie a ministerial job and salary.

Also Mrs Snelgrove said: "I'm sorry Swindon isn't on the list of supporting councils. The administration of Swindon Council is just coasting when the people of Swindon are calling for change."

This is true, the people of Swindon are calling for change but not as she thinks. Sadly for Mrs Snelgrove, the change they're seeking will result in her joining the dole queue.

Was she asleep last Thursday and Friday when the election results came out?

Renewable energy yes but please do not spoil the landscape with any more wind turbines, whose benefits are also suspect.

Yes, we are heading for a mini ice age for 45 - 50 years.

Doug, I accept what you are saying but the cynical amongst could ask why HMG's solution is to tax high emission vehicles rather than regulate that manufacturers should not make them. My wife's car is a Hyundai Matrix which for some reason was fitted with the wrong engine from new. She thought she was buying a low emission car, that's what the literature said. It only became apparent when HMG changed the tax rules and her tax shot up to £243, next year that will more than double. As she says she might as well scrap the car, she won't be able to afford to run it. How many thousands of vehicles are we then going to see abandoned, or 'stolen'.

Not Community Poet anymore then Tone? "We have a council that rides on the coat tails of Government and European climate change initiatives, rather than making this a priority. Err and you don't ride on the government coat tails then Annie? Well of course you don't do you?, I mean you puport to support the local campaign to keep Post Offices open and then proceed to vote with Robber McBroon and co. to close them. "Your 'avin' a giraffe Anne" As Robin H, Buster & the Grumpster say the only change voters in Swindon want to see is their two totally ineffectual Labour MPs on their Norman Tebbit bikes pedalling like mad over Westminster bridge to the local unemployment office -especially Bandwagon Bertha!

The Adver staff appear to be censoring comments and also what we can comment on. A bit high handed and typical of a third rate rag like the Adver. They avoid allowing comment on most controversial subjects for fear of the truth coming out. It needs a regime change amongst the Adver Taliban before we are allowed a free debate.

Whilst I fully support the notion of Freedom of the Press etc and for those who wish to openly comment, I think with that comes a responsibility. Many on here post anonymously (their right), however that makes them essentially immune from 'prosecution'. Perhaps posters should remember that when posting 'stuff' that can be considered very close to the mark. I'm sure then the Adver would allow more free posting. I do however believe this lack of ability to post on Judicial Decisions, which are in the Public Domain is very wrong. We see yet another case today of an offender being dealt with extremely lightly leaving a woman scared for life. That is certainly not what the 'decent' public of Swindon expect of our Judiciary. What happened to 'tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime'. Oh I forgot the jails are full with illegal immigrants and petty offenders. We are now sending lifers to open prisons, but rest assured there has been a risk assessment done.!!!!!

Exactly RFM.

Swindon judges are supposedly 'sick' of drunks continually attacking and injuring innocent people... yet continually let them off when they are arrested and brought to court.

When the judges show these people there are no consequences for their actions we can hardly be surprised when these people feel it perfectly acceptable to get drunk and attack, injure, maim and kill people.

And, sadly, most people seem to just think that's our lot and there's nothing we can do about it.

Well, if you do nothing, you're part of the problem and assist these unaccountable, out of touch judges do the evil that they do.

Write to your councillor and your MP (although, admittedly, Wills & Snelgrove are part of the government who favour the criminal over the victim, so will do nothing).

Comment on these forums whenever you read of more judges letting more criminals walk free from court.

Make the point that you believe victims are more important than criminals and that criminals should not be allowed to walk free from their crimes.

In short, demand that judges abide by the very rules and laws that they are supposed to apply to others.

The current situation HAS to change if we are ever to see crime tackled effectively.
