A CLIMATE change bill by a Swindon MP that aims to turn public buildings green is being supported by councils up and down the country - but not in Swindon.
Anne Snelgrove, MP for South Swindon, will present her bill, which calls for public buildings to be more eco-friendly, for its second reading before parliament on May 16.
If made law the Public Sector Buildings (Energy Performance) Bill will ensure that all office buildings across the public estate will be in the top quarter of energy performance.
The bill is supported by a number of national organisations including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Unison, the RSPB and Help the Aged.
It has also been given support by the Tory front bench and eight councils up and down the country.
But that list does not include Swindon Council.
Mrs Snelgrove said: "I'm sorry Swindon isn't on the list of supporting councils. The administration of Swindon Council is just coasting when the people of Swindon are calling for change.
"We have a council that rides on the coat tails of Government and European climate change initiatives, rather than making this a priority.
"I am really grateful for the support of everyone in Swindon who has contacted me to encourage me to get my Bill on to the statute book."
So far, 268 MPs have signed an early day motion supporting the Bill.
Coun Brian Mattock (Con, Old Town and Lawn), cabinet member for local environment, said: "If you look at the energy management report that was presented at the last cabinet meeting you can see that we have taken what the Government is doing and gone one step forward.
"The report confirmed that we intend to have a significant saving on energy costs over the next five years to the tune of £6.6m.
"That is a big saving to the council tax payer and also goes towards reducing our carbon footprint. This goes towards our target of reducing the council's carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2013."

Do you reckon Anne Snelgrove MP will secure the extra government funding the councils will need to comply with this Bill ?

True there were no motor cars before the last ice age, however the carbon emissions that we produce will bring the next one quicker than it ought. Fossil fuels are running out and we cant just carry on dumping what we don't want in a hole in the ground. We have to address this matter now before its too late, so any discussion, bill (no matter how flawed), or conference is to be welcomed.
All this Carbon footprint business makes me laugh. If every single target was met by every single country in the world then climate change would be 5% less likely to occur. Climate change is cyclical. What will be will be, nature is the main culprit and no one is going to alter that.

In just the last week it has been announced that global warming will stabilise for the next 10 years. It confirms that it is not all man-made but is still used an excuse to con more taxes out of us!

Err and you don't ride on the government coat tails then Annie? Well of course you don't do you?, I mean you puport to support the local campaign to keep Post Offices open and then proceed to vote with Robber McBroon and co. to close them. "Your 'avin' a giraffe Anne" As Robin H, Buster & the Grumpster say the only change voters in Swindon want to see is their two totally ineffectual Labour MPs on their Norman Tebbit bikes pedalling like mad over Westminster bridge to the local unemployment office -especially Bandwagon Bertha!

I also can't understand why we can't comment on the wind turbines at Watchfield although there is no oppurtunity for people to have a pop at Swindons MP's there so maybe the Adver doesn't think it worth opening for debate!

The builder, Old Town says...

Somehow I think not. Snelgrove is nothing but a windbag - how many council building were built way back when ? Does she not understand the significant cost of converting old buildings ? Even worse if they are listed.
Another effing bandwagon for Annie to hitch herself onto.
There are far better things she could be doing like pushing for a Bill to fine supermarkets for excess packaging - but she would't try and hurt big business would she - after all, where would the Labour party get all their donations from ?
She is a joke and the sooner she is removed from office the better.
