Hives damaged as vandals target garden charity

VANDALS got more than they bargained for after smashing up a charity's garden.

The destruction at Cheney Manor-based mental health charity Twigs (Therapeutic Work In Swindon) saw the thugs kick over a beehive, annoying 5,000 honeybees in the process.

And Ross Gregory, of Swindon and District Beekeepers Association, whose apiaries are kept in Twigs' two-acre garden, says the insects would most likely have provided a sting in the tail for the yobs.

Mr Gregory said a number of bees would have been killed, but it will take at least two weeks before the association can ascertain whether the hive's virgin queen bee died.

He said the vandals were lucky because the hive could have contained 10 times as many bees.

He said: "We have five hives at the moment and one was damaged during the incident.

"These hives usually contain 50,000 bees. Luckily for the vandals that they chose to kick in a panel attached to bees from a very young colony.

"I feel sorry for the stupidity of these vandals. Nothing seems to have been stolen so I presume it must have just been youngsters kicking and bashing stuff - perhaps we can chalk it up to youthful mindlessness.

"We are not sure if they were stung but their parents will know."

Twigs service manager Alan Holland said about 30 patients use the garden every day as a form of therapy.

He found the damage when he came into work yesterday, which included three smashed sculptures and signs strewn all over the garden.

He said: "It is sad and also gets me angry, it makes me wonder if these children have any respect at all for a place like this, where people have worked so hard to makes things nice for those who truly need it.

"I presume it was kids because they seem to have been chucking things around at each other.

"There is an air of sadness among many of our clients who have come in and seen the damage done."

Swindon mayor Michael Barnes, who counts Twigs as one of his two charities, said he was appalled by the damage.

He said: "Twigs does some fantastic work in assisting people recovering from various difficulties. It is a sad end to what has been a successful year of fundraising done for the charity."

Twigs is not the only charity to have been targeted recently.

In February head and brain injury charity Headway saw £4,000 worth of damage caused after its Headlands base was targeted by vandals.

Anyone with information about the Twigs attack is asked to call Swindon police on 0845 408 7000 or you can call Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

Well, lets hope the yobs who did this got stung and all suffered from anaphylactic shock as a result.

Totally agree Grumpy. Perhaps any local GP or GWH who've had to deal with any unusual 'stings' can provide the police with details. But no their Human Rights are protected. Incidents like this are why UKIP would repeal the Human Rights Acts. Criminals should not be protected.

As a bee keeper I deplore the vandalism, however Robert there is nothing in principle wrong with the human Rights Act as the UK does not (unlike USA) have a Civil Liberties Bill. The problem with the human rights act is the way it is applied and abused.

Not sure this singular incident warrants a political debate, but, I think we all rather hope the little ****’s responsible for this got quite a few nasty stings, in fact if they did I would be more satisfied with stings than if they were caught and given a stern analysing by social services

These Morons, yobs, and Idiots just laugh at the law and police. If they are caught the courts just give them a slap on wrist for about tenth time and just carry on their lack of respect for the law. Well If I had my way I'd bring home all our brave troops who every day put their lives on the line for this country in Afganistan and Iraq and replace them with these Morons yobs and Idiots let see how brave they are then.

Hopefully the bees have dished out their own justice. Agree with Robert, the human rights act is a waste of time as it is being abused and used for the benefit of low lives like those who are to blame here. UKIP for me at the next election. We are FAR too soft on criminals and should be building more prisons, built by criminals and paid for by criminals by working for their keep, breaking rocks, digging ditches etc.

The thought of these little s***s legging it from a swarm of bees is going to keep me entertained for the rest of the afternoon

Judging from their actions the fools responsible for this vandalism are being short sighted. They would appear to be in need of the help of a mental health charity.

RFM, the Data Protection Act and patient confidentiality have very little to do with Europe.

Swindon residnats and businesses might like to pitch in for a comprehensive CCTV system and secure fencing as a deterrant for such anti-social behaviour.

It's by no means all the answes but it could help.

Tony

sorry to keep droning on
and no poem again tonight
so no sting in the tail

Still, who cares, people with mental health issues mean nothing to society really.

Society is made up of individuals and a large proportion of these individuals will either have had mental health problems themselves or have friends and / or family who have suffered.
You may not care about others but do not tar us all with the same brush.

Well put, John C. If sashstaff really meant to imply he didn't care about other people because of their mental health state, that's beyond unpleasant.

The fact is the vast majority of us have some 'issue' or another. Some of these come to notice and get labelled as 'mental health issues'. Many other people never get counted in the figures 'cos they find ways to cope with or hide their particular issues or hang-ups. Many good people suffer in silence. None of us should belittle or demean anyone else because they struggle. There but for the grace of God, as they say, go we all.

Well, even the top ranking police chiefs now admit that CCTV is next to useless in the supposed fight against crime.

Add to that the criminal's charter - sorry, Human Rights Act - that Blair signed without asking anyone if they wanted the UK to be signed up to its disgraceful code and we find ourselves in a situation where criminals can do as they please and there's very little anyone can do about it.

The police do a good job, despite government attempts to make their job impossible, but still only get anyone convicted in court in relation to just 2% of all recorded crimes.

That means 98% of crime goes completely unpunished in this country.

The biggest single problem with the law and order system in this country, however, is the judiciary.

It is led by the UK's top judge, a man who repeatedly and consistently calls for nobody to be sent to prison - even though his own judges (and all the evidence) shows that the so-called 'community sentences' simply do not work as intended.

Judges' leniency is the major factor in why people commit crime and why criminals repeat their crimes.

Until we move to a system of accountable, publically elected judges, nothing will change and crime will continue to rise unchecked.

A nice thought in theory.

However, what does concern me is that mental health groups constantly try and tell us that people with mental health issues are no more likely to commit crimes than those without, yet when these people are brought to court for the crimes the self same groups instantly say, 'Ah, they're mentally ill and can't be held responsible for their actions.'

You can't have your cake and eat it.

Either mentally ill people are more of a risk to others, which is disturbing, or they are not, in which case they must be treated like any other person in the eyes of the law.
