Charity scheme is hit by burglars

A SMASH and grab raid has forced a mental health charity to consider putting up a perimeter fence to beef up its security.

Therapeutic Work in Gardening Swindon (TWIGS) was broken into on Sunday night after thieves removed tiles and smashed through the ceiling stealing two laptops and £100 in cash. The theft comes just two months after vandals smashed up the charity's garden, kicking over a beehive in the process.

In all, the Cheney Manor-based group has been targeted six times in the last nine years by thieves and vandals. Now the centre's manager Alan Holland is considering whether a security fence would keep the undesirables at bay, despite recently installing a new alarm system, metal window bars and metal plates on the outside doors.

He said: "I am going to start looking into raising money to redo the fencing at the rear of the garden we use, we may need to put security fencing up.

"I am not sure who is responsible but I have the feeling the crime is coming from there.

"It is pretty devastating for everyone here to see this sort of thing happen again.

"But then again sometimes the more you are subjected to it the more you become immune to it - which is sad.

"Everyone works hard to keep the place going so everyone is gutted by losing the laptops."

He added that the group expect the total lost to be approximately £900 - money the charity desperately needs to survive.

A hundred people tend TWIGS' extensive gardens in Cheney Manor Road every week.

They all seek respite from mental health conditions ranging from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, Asperger's syndrome and personality disorders.

Bob, a client of the charity, said: "It is sad that people do these types of things, this place is for people with problems to come in order to gain purpose.

"When these things happen our charity doesn't feel so safe anymore but it should be a safe place for all of us."

Inspector Andy Morten of Swindon police said: "We are in the process of tasking the crime scene, from our view it is always awful when charities are victims in this way.

"I remain convinced that someone will come forward if these criminals end up selling these computers with further information."

I actually attend TWIGS many times a week for support and was present Monday morning to see the devastation that was caused.
TWIGS is many things to many people and sadly the people who have done this, care little for the emotional damage this has caused and the financial damage to this wonderful charity.
I invite these individuals to visit the gardens (not at night to wreak havoc and to steal) but to see the fantastic work that is performed both onsite and in our local community during our opening hours. Please come speak to us and see the many talents we as individuals have. Maybe then you can come to respect our efforts and maybe even support us.
Thank You.

The sick little **** that do this should be made to do community service there - if they are ever caught.

It's a nice sentiment The Gardener, but I'm afraid these low lives are far beyond that kind of rehabilitation.

I believe the law should be changed such that anyone caught stealing from a charity should receive a mandatory 6 month prison sentence - no ifs, no buts.

At the moment I'm afraid charities seem to be viewed as soft targets by the scum.

Security at TWIGS doesn't stretch much beyond a gate, a fence and a couple of doors. Given the human race's acceptance that its most vulnerable members may be continually harassed and abused, I cannot say I am surprised TWIGS finds itself victim. Thieves see it as nothing more than an easy target and I'm sure they'll sleep soundly tonight.

Security at Twigs, I only wish was just a gate and some fence.
(It would certainly be more in keeping with the ethos of TWIGS)
All the doors have been reinforced with steel. (From a previous break in) There are bars welded to all the windows. There is a modern alarm system and CCTV.
Sadly these individuals preferred to decimate our roof, rather than putting their skills in roofing to more positive uses.
How ironic is it not that we feel these individual may eventually end up behind bars, in a not to dissimilar place with high fencing, cctv, alarms.. bars on the windows... reinforced doors.
One thing is for sure though, all the people at TWIGS and the many many people who help support TWIGS, will do their level best to ensure that the charity will continue, to help people like myself, too improve the outlook on our lives. Something these Perpetrators are lightyears away from doing themselves.
