A POLISH man wanted by Interpol in connection with a murder was arrested after Wiltshire police swooped on the Subway sandwich shop in Devizes.

The man, believed to be Piotr Kupiec, 28, who was wanted by Polish police for his alleged involvement in a number of crimes including a killing and theft, was a worker in the shop beneath the Travelodge in London Road.

Police went to Subway at 7.50pm on Wednesday and executed an arrest warrant on behalf of Interpol. He was taken into custody and is now being dealt with by Interpol.

It is understood that the man had worked at Subway for some time and was also a member of a local gym. People who knew him were shocked at the arrest and the allegations that he was involved with a Polish gang and organised crime in his native country.

One person who knew him said: "He was a very friendly guy. Everyone liked him."

A Wiltshire police spokesman said: "At 7.50pm on January 13, 2016 Wiltshire Police officers executed an arrest warrant on behalf of Interpol. They attended Subway, in London Road, Devizes, and arrested a 28-year-old Polish man in connection with an investigation into a murder in Poland."

Mr Kupiec's details appear on Interpol's most wanted website where it is stated he was born in Krakow in 1987. It says the charges he is wanted for are injury causing death/manslaughter/murder, assault/maltreatment and theft.

Polish media reporting on the hunt for Kupiec have said that he was part of a gang in Krakow and police had set up up an operation called Infra Red to try and find him and other members who are reported to be among the country's most wanted.

The arrest put the spotlight on the intelligence unit at Wiltshire police HQ in Devizes managed by Det Insp Matt Davey. He said that his team dealt with European Arrest Warrants that are passed to them by National Crime Agency when it is believed a person wanted by forces from across Europe might be living in Wiltshire.

He said: "I can't say exactly what means we use to investigate but we have access to a number of databases and a lot of research is carried out.

"This is clearly a good result for not just the intelligence team but the whole force."

Det Insp Davey said that in 2015 the unit was sent details of 17 people with European Arrest Warrants against them and seven arrests were made.

A spokeswoman for Subway said: "We can confirm that a staff member at the Devizes Subway franchise in Wiltshire was arrested in relation to a matter not connected with the store.

"As this is now being investigated by the police, we are unable to comment further."

The spokeswoman added: "He provided the valid identification and documents required to gain employment at the time he was hired."
