A DRUNK plaguing the streets of Trowbridge has been spared a prison sentence twice in one week after the court heard he is going to a dry house.

Homeless Kenneth Beavis will this afternoon leave for Northampton to try and tackle his alcohol addiction, which has seen him brought before the courts for numerous offences including being drunk and disorderly.

And just days after being issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order by the police and courts on Thursday, banning the 31-year-old from acting in an anti-social manner or drinking alcohol in Trowbridge town centre, Beavis was found by an officer swigging on cider.

When he appeared at Swindon Magistrates' Court today, prosecutor Vyvyanne Thatcher told the hearing how Beavis was confronted by an officer who saw him holding a cup of liquid. Also by his foot was some Frosty Jack's cider.

Beavis later threw the drink over his shoulder and was slurring his words, Mr Thatcher said.

But Mark Glendenning, defending, told the court Beavis disputes it was alcohol in the cup.

"He is addressing the problem and wants to address the problem and steps are in place,' Mr Glendenning said.

Chairman of the bench Natalie Cuss told Beavis: "You need to leave court, get all your stuff together and go to that dry house.

"This is your last chance."

Beavis was given a four week prison sentence which may be activated if he commits another crime in the next six months.

Magistrates also gave him the same sentence yesterday.

He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge which will be consolidated with the £1,600 he already owes the court and is to be deducted from his benefits.

As he left the dock he thanked the magistrates.
